cracka review

Since 1973 the Taylors Estate range has been winning fans, and we are unashamed groupies of these magnificent Clare Valley wines. The Shiraz of the region has long been revered and this rich style is one we love as it pairs brilliantly with red meats and mature cheeses. Lifted with plum and black fruit aromas and a touch of trademark olive as well as subtle oak. The palate is all about Clare generosity, it’s rich and mouthfilling with a soft mouthfeel and supple tannins. It’s rich and long, with superb texture and balance.

expert reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
An honest, fruit-driven shiraz whose spicy, lightly dusty and minty aromas of cassis, raspberries, violets and cedar/chocolate oak are backed by musky scents of cloves, herbs and cinnamon. It's smooth and measured, with a brightly lit but restrained expression of black and red berries, plums and older oak supported by a slightly awkward extract.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
All but one of the four gold medals (and trophy) emblazoned on the front label are, well, curious, the one with unquestionable status the International Wine & Spirits Competition Õ12 (UK). It is a generous wine, with abundant red and black fruits, ripe tannins and come-hither oak that provided the floorboards for its show success. Great value.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
Smooth and minty, with fiery, earthy and chocolatey undertones, this dark, spicy and lightly toasty shiraz greets its deep, briary presence of dark plums and blackberries with sweet, lightly toasty vanilla oak. It's supported by a fine spine of bony tannins, and offers genuine length and richness of fruit.

A pretty, spicy shiraz whose intense aromas of dark plums, berries and smoky chocolate oak are lifted by scents of violets, white pepper and a whiff of mint. Smooth, juicy and approachable, its rather long, juicy and elegant palate is tightly knit with fresh oak and plaint, fine tannins, finishing with persistent fruit and freshness.

Good colour; well-made, supremely honest, medium-bodied shiraz with plum and blackberry fruit cradled in vanillin oak

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
The Clare Valley is better known for its shiraz than for its cabernet, and yet invariably the quality is the other way around. Here's another shiraz that isn't in the class of its stablemate cabernet. Spicy, almost gamey wine with a hit of sweet, blackberried flavour filling out the centre before a sharp, almost metallic finish. Moderate vanillin oak in the aftertaste. Leaves your mouth feeling really dry - even if those sweet fruit flavours through the middle are nice.

Complex layers of black fruit flavours interwoven by ripe tannins on the medium- to full-bodied palate; American oak fits well in the overall profile. Good value.

Ken Gargett (2006 Vintage) says
Sun coming up, death, taxes, politicians lying, Taylors Shiraz an absolute cracker and fabulous value. Some things are ever so predictable. It was the cab sauvignon that put Taylors on the map years ago but they've come a long way since then, and this is a winery with a bullet. As good as they are now, expect more. Meanwhile, don't miss this. If all wine was this good, you wouldn't need us.

Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
Ripe, juicy and generous, this meaty, briary shiraz reveals a smoky presence of blackberries, raspberries, redcurrants and dark plums backed by vanilla and choc/mint oak. Long and smooth, with intense small fruits and polished oak framed by firmish, fine tannins, it finishes with pleasing length, structure and a hint of spirity warmth.

James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Far more fruit richness and weight than normally encountered at this price and volume (discounting is almost inevitable); abundant round, supple blackberry fruits and a hint of oak.

Jeremy Oliver (2005 Vintage) says
Slightly cooked and dehydrated, with meaty, jammy flavours of blackberries, dark plums, currants and berries made more sumptuous, sweet and mouthfilling courtesy of some generously applied sweet and smoky American oak. It finishes slightly syrupy and treacle-like, with lingering suggestions of menthol and licorice.

While not reduced, the bouquet was shut down soon after bottling; potent juicy blackberry fruit; minimal oak impact; lots of potential to improve.

Jeremy Oliver (2004 Vintage) says
Honest, ripe and flavoursome, this oaky and spicy shiraz has a smoky aroma of cassis, plums and prunes over peppery spices and smoky mocha/coconut ice oak Long and juicy, its vibrant palate of spicy blackberries, plums and redcurrants fits well with its generous measure of sweet oak. It's framed by moderately firm tannins and finishes with some tight and refreshing acidity.

Vibrant, early-drinking shiraz with a peppery fragrance of raspberries, cherries, red plums and creamy coconut oak-Medium weight, it's supple and smooth, with pleasingly lively berry flavours and oak underpinned by light, powdery tannins.

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; the moderately intense bouquet has slightly dusty vanilla oak as the first impression, sweet, dark fruits as the second; the powerful palate brings it all together, with dark plum and blackberry fruit supported by typical Clare Valley tannins.

James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Vivid purple-red; the bouquet is flooded with clean, fresh blackberry and raspberry fruit with oak somewhere in the background. The palate has plenty of depth, texture and weight, with delicious raspberry and plum fruit flavours; oak barrel-matured; exceptional value.

James Halliday (2000 Vintage) says
Youthful purple-red; the bouquet is a touch hard and oaky, but the palate redeems the wine, with plenty of dark cherry/plum fruit and good tannins.

winemaker's notes

A soft and fleshy Shiraz boasting a lively palate of juicy red berry fruits, plum and spice, along with subtle chocolate and savoury characters from the oak maturation.

Colour: At release the wine is a dark red colour with ruby red hues

Bouquet: The wine has an enticing, lifted aroma of plum, blackcurrant and dark cherry fruits along with a bouquet of subtle mocha and a touch of oak derived spice

Palate: The palate is plump & generous with ripe fruit characters of plum and blackberry. Mocha coffee and subtle spice from oak maturation balance the fruit flavours. The wine is medium to full-bodied with a fleshy mid-palate and supple tannin structure. It is a well balanced wine with great texture, good length and enjoyable fruit on the finish

Cellaring notes: This wine can be enjoyed upon release but will reward careful cellaring up to and possibly beyond 2022
