2015 Taylors St Andrews Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Taylors believe ‘the wine is everything’ and when you taste this flagship Riesling you’ll see what they mean. For over forty years this world-class producer has been turning out the goods and the St Andrews Riesling stands as a beacon for quality. It shows Clare Valley regionality on the nose with lemon and lime and a hint of talc before an intense citrus palate that’s laden with minerality before a long, limey finish. Pair it with oysters and see why the best things in life are often the simplest.

Winemaker's Notes

Hedonistic and tightly focused, this exceptionally balanced wine displays lemon, lime and a seamless spine of natural acidity leading to a finish of extraordinary length.

Colour: At release, the wine is a very pale straw colour with a slight green tinge to the edge

Bouquet: The wine displays zesty lemon and lime aromas along with faint orange blossom and talc

Palate: This particular Clare Riesling is still tight and restrained with a linear focus to the palate and purity of fruit flavours. There are lashings of fresh lemon/lime juice characters up front and a slate-like minerality across the mid-palate. It is backed up by a persistent and refreshing lime acid finish.

Cellaring notes: Under ideal conditions this wine should cellar well to 2035, possibly longer

Alc/vol: 12.9%

2015 Taylors St Andrews Riesling

Expert Reviews

Gary Walsh (2015 Vintage) says
For a one year old Riesling, it already smells quite developed. Lime juice, toast, tangerine skin and soapy perfume. Steps up on the palate with a gentle chalky texture, good limey flavour offering crunch and bite, and a slightly thick finish of good length. It’s pretty good drinking now.

James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
Often held back for release with 5 years bottle age, but this already has such finesse and balance that part is on the market, a decision validated by the trophy for Best Riesling, Melbourne Wine Awards '14; lemon, lime and apple blossom tell of the flavours to follow.

Tyson Stelzer (2012 Vintage) says
St Andrew is the patron saint of long-lived riesling and in 2012 he has ascended to new spiritual heights. A pretty bouquet of lifted apple blossom introduces a palate that walks a knife-edge of ripeness. Pronounced, searing acidity is offset cleverly with a touch of fruit sweetness, without deviating from the perfect ripeness of lime and granny smith apple fruit. An impressively fine St Andrews, with a steely, mineral backbone that calls for at least five years in the cellar.

This has very pure and focused fruits, lime and lemon too, terrific shape and depth and a very, very composed, fragrant nose; talc and chalky minerals here. The palate is rich and concentrated, with lime and lemon fruits on offer. Terrific wine.

Bold aromas with stone fruit, cashew honey and apple with vitamin B edge. Rich texture palate, dry, very youthful, with abundant fresh citrus, specially necatarine fruit and slight grip to the finish. Concentrated but fine at the same time Very long lingering flavours.

A high-class Clare Riesling, fully reflecting the top vintage and a small selection of the best plots of the vineyard resulting in a wine of singular length and intensity to its palate, lemon zest and unsweetened lime married to crisp acidity.

Vibrant green hue; pure lime and bath talc bouquet, with attractive floral and fennel notes; the palate is incredibly tight and unevolved, set to see, once again, a long and graceful future ahead; dry, chalky and zesty to conclude.

Rich, round and unctuous, this heady, floral and spicy riesling delivers intense, bright and punchy aromas of lemon, lime and apple before a luscious, juicy palate of smoothness, length and almost a fatty viscosity. It finishes with crisp acids, and lingering notes of pear and peach.

The winemakers choose the most concentrated vintages with the best balance for this label and give them extra special handling. They show the remarkable flavour changes and softening texture riesling is capable.

Very pale colour; an amazingly fresh bouquet, exhibiting pure lime juice and floral aromas; the palate delivers precision and length, with rapier-like acidity and a generous dollop of fruit coursing all the way to the finish.

Heady, floral and deeply perfumed with lavender, musk, lime juice and pear over alluring slate-like undertones, this long, luscious and seamless riesling delivers a bright, even palate of youthful, juicy flavour. It's underpinned by fine phenolics and punctuated by a crisp, but very gentle acidity. Finely balanced, very complete and elegant, it has a long cellaring future ahead.

Glowing yellow-green; has fine restraint to the mineral, spice and citrus flavours supported by perfect acidity; still only halfway to its optimum.

Varnishy, oxidised and slightly volatile, this toasty, evolved and floral expression of lemon rind and buttery fruit is smooth and juicy, but finishes with a toasty, volatile rawness.

Glowing yellow-green; a complex bouquet and palate; has built layers of richness, with citrus peel and touches of petrol; very good length. Vividly demonstrates wines do develop normally under screwcap.

Toasty, honeyed aromas of floral, citrusy fruit backed by buttery, keroseney and lightly smoky, beeswax like nuance, introduce a flavoursome, sumptuous riesling developing reasonably quickly. Round and creamy, its long and generous palate finishes long and citrusy.

Medium yellow-green; the bouquet has a classic and complex mix of rich lime and toast; the full-flavoured palate builds richness on the mid-palate, followed by great finishing acidity.

James Halliday (1996 Vintage) says
Brilliant, glowing light to medium green-yellow; the bouquet is still very youthful, with no toast nor kerosene characters developing, still predominantly lime, pear and apple. A classic, long, powerful and focussed palate leaves no doubt the wine is just entering the plateau of maturity.
