Cracka Review

The Woodthorpe vineyard has had quite a history. It went from a military camp to a staging post back in the day, before becoming a racetrack for over 50 years in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The only racing that happens now is the race to pour another glass from this top notch NZ producer. Vibrant scents of fragrant red and black fruits adorn the nose, together with a lick of fruit toast. The palate is soft and fruit-driven with mocha notes and a smooth, spicy finish. It's top value, medium-term drinking that punches well above its weight, and would match well with braised lamb chops.

Winemaker's Notes

Sourced exclusively from Te Mata Estate's own vineyards, the Estate Vineyards wines represent the best qualities of their variety, vintage and Hawke's Bay origin.

Vineyards: Estate Vineyards Syrah ’15 was harvested between 7 and 21 April 2015 from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards in Hawke’s Bay’s Woodthorpe Terraces and Bridge Pa Triangle sub-regions.

Winemaking: The Syrah grapes were combined with 2% of Viognier, then de-stemmed and co-fermented. The resulting wine remained on skins for extended maceration before pressing. It was then run off to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for seven months’ maturation, during which time it was regularly topped and racked. The wine received a traditional egg white fining before being bottled in March 2016.

Tasting Note: Bright red with a purple hue, a glass of Estate Vineyards Syrah ’15 is like opening a spicebox. It overflows with cherry, blackberry, boysenberry, thyme, pepper and the irresistible scents of Black Doris plum and vanilla. There’s floral lift and charm here, but also a supple palate with luxurious savoury fruit and enticing notes of red and black liquorice. The perfume and depth of this Syrah is matched by its fine, textural expression, balance and soft, even tannins.

Food Match: It is a wonderful accompaniment to all red meats, savoury and lightly spiced dishes of Mediterranean cuisine, as well as soft cheeses.

Cellaring Potential: Estate Vineyards Syrah ’15 will continue to evolve in bottle for two to four years from harvest.

Huon Hooke (2015 Vintage) says
Deep purple/red colour and a pronounced peppery aroma, fresh and clean. The wine is medium-bodied and crisp in the mouth; fresh and lively with balanced acid and tannins and just a light, nicely judged grip on the end - which also tastes peppery. Very good and very much a cool-climate Shiraz style.
