2015 Te Whare Ra Sauvignon Blanc

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Here's a lovely, medium-term savvy that will develop nicely over the next 5+ years. Enticing aromas of tropical island passionfruit, guava and melons waft out of the glass, along with a hint of dairy, whilst the palate is light, crisp and limey, with a slightly creamy texture, a touch of talciness, and appley acidity refreshing the finish. It's a cut above the average, so chill it and enjoy with a nice Thai chicken salad.

Winemaker's Notes

The majority of fruit for this wine comes from the Awatere Valley sub-region of Marlborough. The growing conditions in this area are characterised by low fertility soils, cooler night-time temperatures and warmer days than in the Wairau Valley. This results in a longer ripening season which is all important for balanced wines with purity, ripe acidity and flavour concentration. The wines from this area tend to be more restrained in their youth but have great texture, structure and longevity which is why we choose to make an Awatere predominant blend.

Campbell Mattinson (2015 Vintage) says
The wine itself is brimful of flavour, all pineapple and gooseberry, grapefruit and lemon. It’s steely and a touch grassy, a quiet riot going on, with an added burst of flavour to the finish. It wants for neither power nor elegance; it has both sides of the coin covered. It’s quite excellent.

Tyson Stelzer (2012 Vintage) says
To makers Anna and Jason Flowerday, every one of the finer details matter, and the refinement of their wines is proof. There’s a fruit purity and an enticing primary complexity at play here, reinforced by the subtle texture infused by lees ageing. Intense guava, mint, capsicum, lime zest and notes of pepper linger with impressive, linear determination and outstanding persistence, energised by steely lemon juice acidity.

Crunchy green apple provides the core, passionfruit and mango the pungent fruit boost to this impressive Sauvignon Blanc. Textured on the palate, with a lovely chalky ebb and flow across the palate.
