2015 Thorn Clarke Sandpiper Eden Valley Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

We should all drink much more Riesling. Much, much more. Why? Because after exhaustive research (many bottles were sacrificed), we'd decided that Riesling is the most sessionable white wine in the country. Dirt cheap too.

You want evidence? Look no further than this 2015 Thorn-Clarke Sandpiper Riesling. Drawn from a vineyard that sits 475m above sea level at Mt Crawford in the Eden Valley, this white wine is so sparkly vital and refreshing that you need sunglasses when drinking it (or at least we did. It could have been the hangover).

We're not alone in the love for this Thorn-Clarke bargain Rizza, with Huon Hooke giving it 93 points and praised the 'refined texture', 'long persistence' and the 'touch of spice.'

Gourmet Traveller sang its praises too, calling this a 'perennial favourite' and also awarding it 93 points.

Best of all, this is crazy cheap. Absurdly cheap. So sharply priced that you get paper cuts by touching the bottle. Damned paper cuts...

Go on, buy some now...

Winemaker's Notes

COMMENTS: The colour is pale straw with a green hue on release. The aroma is fresh lifted lemon. Bright ripe lemon fruit characters dominate the palate and crisp minerally acid forms the backbone of the wine. The palate has rich citrus flavours, balanced by natural acidity and intense flavour. The wine has a refreshingly clean finish with long acid persistence.

VINIFICATION NOTES: Harvest was carried out at night. The fruit was pressed (using an airbag press) within an hour of harvest. Care was taken not to lose the delicate Riesling aromas and flavour precursors in the juice. After settling, the juice was warmed and inoculated with a neutral yeast selected for its ability to respect the purity of Riesling. Post fermentation the wine was stabilised, minimally fined, filtered then bottled.

VINTAGE NOTES: The 2015 Vintage was characterized by a dry period extending from July to April together with warmer than usual temperatures during Spring until mid January. Mild temperatures from mid January resulted in a slow ripening process, leading to the development of good floral characters and the fruit retaining its natural acidity.

Expert Reviews

Huon Hooke (2015 Vintage) says
"Dried flower and straw aromas mingle with a touch of spice; the wine is very intense and yet also delicate in the mouth, with refined texture and a long persistence. The track-record shows it will also age well."

Campbell Mattinson (2017 Vintage) says
It’s a buoyant riesling. Delightful drinking. Ripe and cutting at once. Ever-so-fragrant. Lemon, lime and talc. Juice and rind. Mid-palate has plenty of flavour, in a varietal context, but the finish sings out clearly. Tip top value too.
