    What does classic dry red mean? Well, it’s a classic blend of Shiraz and Petit Verdot and it’s got a dry finish, but more than that it comes from one of the original wineries of the Margaret River region. Vasse Felix are as famous as the surf breaks that dot the region and this wine is one of their more down-to-earth offerings that has turned up at a multitude of barbecues in the past. Expect equal amounts of raspberry and pepper with a generous, mouth-filling palate and soft, even tannins.

    Attractive wine and a good taste of Margaret River at twenty bucks. Grew in stature after being open for a day so a good idea to slosh this in the decanter prior to drinking. It's made using shiraz and cabernet sauvignon grapes. Could do with a bit more depth but it's very nice to drink. Tastes of chocolate, slight gumleaf, mixed berries and blackcurrant. Medium-bodied with nice fine tannins and some herbal flavour - but satisfying. Clean and ripe with a long and pleasant aftertaste.

    Here's another 2006 red from Margaret River to defy the 'horror vintage' tag. Smells good, tastes good and feels good as it runs across your tongue - what more could you want? It's a blend of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon and it has a good deal of plummy, gravelly, inky depth, its ooze of vanillin oak tailored perfectly to its general weight of flavour. Good red, full stop. It might even be better in a year or two.

    winemaker's notes

    A soft and sumptuous Margaret River Shiraz. Vasse Felix Classics are fruit-driven, approachable styles that have become some of Australia's most popular everyday classics since their inception in the 1980s.

    Appearance: Deep purple maroon.

    Nose: Fruit and savoury elements are beautifully lifted, with dark plum, juniper berry, smoked chillies, a touch of leather and an inviting note of fruit and nut chocolate.

    Palate: So soft and juicy on the palate, easy and delicious with very soft acidity and remarkably soft, fine tannins. The flavours are clean with fresh plums and plum sauce with a lovely fruit and nut chocolate carrying.

    Winemaker Comments: The individual batches were crushed separately into stainless steel fermentation vessels. They were pressed off skins early to maintain a soft, succulent mouth feel. The resulting wine was matured in barriques for 12 months, with the incorporation of traditional oxidative handling, to soften and round the tannin profile and add further aroma and flavour complexity.

    Vintage Description: Mild conditions in Margaret River with no extreme weather conditions, allowing for balanced fruit and a slow and steady intake. There was no disease pressure and fruit quality is excellent the only disappointment was yields being down across the Region for all key varieties. This was the outcome of storms in spring and pressure from an increase in the local population of Silver Eyes (birds) and no Marri Blossom.

    Varieties: 99% Shiraz, 1% Petit Verdot.

    Cellaring: Drinks beautifully now, best enjoyed in its youth.

    Alc/vol: 14.0%
