Cracka Review

The 'son' of the Vasse Felix Cabernet, the Filius delivers power, texture and richness in a more approachable package. With 13% Malbec in the blend, the herbal, tannic structure of the Cabernet is beautifully padded out by the black-fruited Malbec. An outstanding Cabernet from one of Margaret River's most important producers - all for under a lobster.

Winemaker's Notes

Winemaker's notes: The structural elements of fine Margaret River Cabernet are embraced with a hint of the Malbec's dark fruit to make a classic Vasse Felix style Cabernet Sauvignon. All vineyard sections are fermented separately, accentuating the natural beauty of each parcel of fruit. After 12 months matured in barrique, the Cabernet was blended with the ideal percentage of Malbec to create a savoury fine wine with medium weight, where big is not considered the best.

Colour: Maroon with a purple tint.

Nose: A classical savoury Cabernet perfume. Vibrant blackcurrant fruit with gravel earth, hints of venison, mushrooms and truffles mingle with a fine sage-like herbal lift. Fragrant spiced oak notes sit beautifully underneath, delivering a touch of classical cedar.

Palate: A light entrance leads to juicy fruit with bright acidity, with flavours of blackcurrant and woodsy native forest. Shapely as a Cabernet should be, the power starts to build with a fine tannin profile, leaving a lengthy dry, linear finish.

Expert Reviews

Gary Walsh says
Dusty gum leaf and gravel perfume, baking spices, and a mix of red and black berries. Medium bodied, again firm and dusty, subdued yet flavoursome, excellent bone structure and a lovely mouth-perfume, and a clean long finish. Trim and fresh, and very pleasant to drink.
Huon Hooke says
Deep red/purple colour with a very attractive, clean and pure, fruit-driven aroma of cedar, tobacco, cassis and violets. It's medium to full-bodied and intense, with gentle tannins which are not too pervasive, and an overall impression of suberb balance. The aftertaste is elegant and balanced and more-ish. A ripping cabernet. (13% malbec)
Bob Campbell MW says
A pure and perfect expression of cabernet sauvignon with blackberry, cassis, cigar box and a suggestion of black olive. A fine-boned and linear red with a lingering finish. Gently drying and not too austere. Should develop very well in the bottle.
Ray Jordan says
Such an elegant and stylish cabernet that captures the regional stamp or Margaret River. Blackcurrant and black olive tapenade on the nose. The palate has good oak integration and firm sinewy tannins. Controlled and integrated. Its a wine that clearly over-delivers at this price.
