Cracka Review

Villa Maria almost dominate the New Zealand wine scene with an amazing range of wines and vineyards. This Pinot is sourced from the Wairau and Awatere Valleys of Marlborough that provide the perfect climate and soil for Pinot to thrive. All the character you look for in quality Pinot is crammed in here - raspberry, ripe cherries and some spice on the nose while the palate is soft and savoury with a complex web of fine grained tannins holding it all in place. A great accompaniment to all things mushroom and gamey.

Winemaker's Notes

Pinot Noir is a red grape which has found in New Zealand a home away from home. Intense, elegant and fruit-driven in style, Pinot Noir is an extremely food friendly wine which may exhibit an array of vibrant flavours including red fruit, plum, cherry, currant, often with notes of clove and spice.

Vineyard description: Fruit is sourced from a number of vineyards in the Awatere and Wairau Valleys of Marlborough. The sites are all different making their own unique impression on the final blend. All of the vineyards are low yielding, shoot and fruit thinned, and leaf plucked to ensure flavour ripeness.

Winemaker's comment: Displaying lifted aromas of mature red cherries and berry fruits - hallmarks of Marlborough Pinot Noir, whilst on the palate the wine displays succulent fruit with complex spice, wild herb and savoury elements.

Serving suggestion: Enjoy with red meats, salmon or aged cheese

Nick Stock (2011 Vintage) says
A lovely, sweet-smelling and well-finished pinot noir from the polished Villa stable: rich cherry and cherry pastry aromas here, gentle spice and attractive, clear fruit definition. The palate s medium weight with supple fruit, some grainy, grippy tannins and a fine, fluffy tannin finish.

This has a brilliant red-fruit nose, with lively cherries and spice, and bright strawberry too - glossy and polished. The palate's simple and brisk: really neat light strawberry fruits on offer, tannins are web-like, acid is crunchy and the balance is spot-on.

I've got massive respect for George Fistonich and his team for the way they stick to their guns and deliver consistently on their promise of quality. This is an approachable spiced cherry and berry fruited pinot with gentle spice adding complexity. Soft, smooth tannins mean this is an easy quaffing style.

This packs some attractive varietal character and taps into the Marlborough region's aptitude for making ripe pinot with fragrance. Gravelly minerals, spiced cherry, chirpy oak13.5% aromas, supple cherry flavours and fine musky tannins. The acidity freshens and brings lift through the finish - young, balanced and confident style.
