Cracka Review

Lots of Shiraz Viognier love here - coupling ripe, choc-berry Shiraz fruit with just a dash of juicy, super rich Viognier. It's a bit like an in-tune married couple actually, a symbiotic relationship with nary a thrown plate in sight...

Winemaker's Notes

Variety: Shiraz 95%, Viognier 5%.

Vineyard: The majority of the Shiraz comes from the Azzolino vineyard which consists of 30 year old vines grown on heavier dark clay soils. The climate of McLaren Vale is often compared to that of the Mediterranean, warm sunny days, with sea breeze influences from the nearby Gulf of St Vincent. These warm days in union with the cooling maritime evening changes are perfect for ripening the grapes whilst maintaining a crisp, clean acid structure.

Winemaking: Parcels of Shiraz were harvested in late February and March, with each one fermented separately, using open fermenters. A small part of Viognier was added with the Shiraz, giving aromatic lift, and brightness, while also helping with colour. Warm fermentation temperatures combined with regular pump-overs and plunging ensured optimum extraction. Only the best parcels were selected to produce the wine, which were matured in stainless steel as well as new and old French oak for 9-18 months. The Shiraz pressings were also added back into the blend to add complexity.

Tasting Note: Bright purple intensity, the colour is solid to the core. The nose is offering a tremendous lift of spice from the Viognier, dark black berries supported in the background by the careful use of oak. The palate is rich and luscious with the fruits dominating harnessed by flowing tannins that are long and lasting.

2015 Willunga 100 McLaren Vale Shiraz Viognier

Expert Reviews

Wine Companion (2015 Vintage) says
This full-bodied, juicy expression boasts a deep crimson flare, segueing righteously into a morass of blueberry, black cherry and mulberry fruits, clean and transparent; flecked with uplifting violet florals and anise bound to an undercarriage of peppery acidity and sinewy tannins. A scoop of vanilla pod oak provides a winning creaminess.

Huon Hooke (2015 Vintage) says
Deep purple/red colour and a rich fruit-and-oak amalgam on the bouquet. The wine is also rich and deep and brooding on the palate. Lots of foresty, earth-bound flavours and aromas, and it's more than simple fruit. Very good and great value.

Tony Keys (2015 Vintage) says
Viognier does give a lift and perfume to Shiraz so is often welcome. This is a very smooth well-crafted wine offering plenty on the inward journey.
Patrick Eckel (2015 Vintage) says
They are known as the Grenache experts but the Shiraz Viognier produced by Willunga 100 is a consistent favourite of mine, it combines concentrated varietal fruit with more approachable floral notes before showing a more serious earthen side that makes it a bargain at $22. The inclusion of Viognier (5%) and well integrated oak give a generosity and seamless texture to the wine. The finish is a long and enjoyable mix of lifted plum, sweet earth and gentle spice.
