Cracka Review

This classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from our friends at Wynns is hard to ignore. Plush fruit, fine tannins, beautiful length - what more can you ask for from a great Australian Cabernet? Roast lamb special!

Winemaker's Notes

Australia’s first ever Cabernet Sauvignon, Wynns Black Label dates back to 1954 and is revered by many. This is one of the most collected and cellared wines in Australia, and is renowned as a classic expression of each Coonawarra season.

Maturation: 18 months in new and seasoned French oak 19% new hogsheads and barriques, 20% vats, the balance in 1-3yo hogsheads and barriques.

Vintage Conditions 2015: A warm spring with even flowering and set, giving good yields. A mild summer, and long ripening period delivered full fruit flavours and balanced acidity. An outstanding Coonawarra vintage.

Colour: Glossy deep purple.

Aroma: Multilayered and intense aromas, elegant and attractive, with the appearance of ripe dark fruits dark cherry and blackberry notes, and hints of complex spice.

Palate: Impressively balanced and soft with a feeling of ripe fruit, black pepper, dry leaves and soft acidity. Polished, fine French oak stretches out the back palate and enhances the dark and brambly notes. The tannins are ‘melted’, perfectly ripe, and the finish is long, smooth, fragrant and juicy.

Cellaring: The milestone 60th vintage of the black label Cabernet has 60 years of ageability to live up to and should proudly stand the test. Enjoy on release or cellar carefully for up to 20 years.

Perfect Pairing: Teriyaki salmon with sesame pak choi or grilled salmon tacos with avocado salsa.

Why? Salmon is a full flavoured and succulent fish, and a medium bodied, textured wine like black label Cabernet perfectly cuts the richness and enhances the intense flavours and textures.

Alc/vol: 13.8%

2015 Wynns Black Label Coonawarra Cabernet

Expert Reviews

Mike Bennie (2015 Vintage) says
Anticipated, awaited, people jones for the Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon. Even tempered, reliable, structured, cellar-worthy. All that and more. No doubt that the reign of Sue Hodder at the helm of Wynn’s has been pivotal, phenomenal, legacy-making. Brilliant to see. Superb release. Unruffled pedigree here. Understated Cabernet that thumbs its nose at the universe saying ‘Coonawarra has a righteous place amongst the stars’. It’s a purring flow of knitted tannins woven firm over succulent, dark berried, fine garrigue, graphite-edged fruit character. Tight, just medium weighted, exceptionally long, controlled and ultra fine in its finish. It’s not for now so much as a generation from now, but there’s a greedy pleasure in early approach and admiring what’s in your glass. Excellent wine.

Huon Hooke (2015 Vintage) says
Very deep purple colour; the bouquet young and fresh, the fruit aromas bright and reminding of blueberry, raspberry and mulberry. A hint of dried banana on the nose is the only inkling of oak that is given. A very elegant wine, intense and balanced, finely-honed and very long. Time will reveal it to be a superb vintage. Tremendous persistence and utterly gorgeous flavours.

Jeremy Oliver (2015 Vintage) says
A superb expression of medium to full-bodied Coonawarra Cabernet whose pristine, mouthfilling flavours of cassis, mulberries and dark plums are deftly enhanced by fresh cedary oak and backed by hint of mineral and dried herbs. From its floral perfume to its exceptionally long and seamless finish, it’s artfully balanced and stylish, building in richness and texture. A long-term regional classic.
