2015 Xanadu Margaret River Chardonnay
Growing Conditions: A relatively mild, warm winter resulted in an early bud-burst to kick-start the growing season. This was followed by some relatively wild spring weather however with wet, windy conditions affecting fruit set and resulting in low yields across most varieties (particularly Chardonnay) in the region. Beautiful, warm weather returned in summer which saw flavour ripening accelerate quickly, bringing about our earliest vintage on record. A lack of Marri blossom leading up to and during harvest meant bird pressure was extreme, with netting absolutely vital this season. After the whites were harvested we experienced a minor rain event at the end of February and cooler conditions ensued. The 2015 Xanadu Chardonnay is predominantly Estate grown in the Wallcliffe sub-region, with 80% of the blend being made with fruit sourced from our Stevens Road and Lagan Estate vineyards.
Winemaking Notes: Made entirely from Gin Gin clone Chardonnay which was whole bunch pressed followed by 100% barrel fermentation in select French oak (25% new oak). Wild fermentation was encouraged on all of the components, in order to introduce more complexity and personality into the wine. All of the individual batches which make up the blend were lees stirred throughout a nine-month oak maturation period, without any malolactic fermentation. The final blend was put together in November 2015.
Colour: Pale straw.
Nose: The bouquet of this elegant yet powerful Chardonnay offers fresh pears, nectarine, and citrus fruits with underlying hints of complexity with flinty/funky, green mango characters.
Palate: The palate is medium bodied and tightly coiled, displaying pears, white fleshed stone fruits and tangy lemony/grapefruit flavours. The wine offers a fine boned structure complimented by a lovely yoghurty texture derived from lees stirring. Taut, yet opulent, the intense fruit and bright acidity combine to focus the wine perfectly to a crisp, lingering fruit finish.
Cellaring Potential: A modern style of Chardonnay, displaying classic Margaret River hallmarks. The 2015 Xanadu Chardonnay is a wine which, while drinking well in its youth, will reward with careful cellaring.

2015 Xanadu Margaret River Chardonnay
A wonderfully enticing contrast between the tension of malic acidity and all the complexity of wild fermentation in French oak barrels, rippling with layers of grapefruit and white peach, carrying all the body and presence of Gin Gin clone Chardonnay.
In the 'house style' for Xanadu Chardonnay. Poised and elegant, the aromas and flavours are in the citrus and stone fruit spectrum, the oak beautifully integrated and providing texture as much as anything. Grapefruit-like acidity runs evenly through the palate, gathering and lingering on the finish.Drink by 2022
Light to medium straw colour and a nutty, nougat-like bouquet; the palate rich, powerful, deep and ample. A very flavoursome Chardonnay which is also taut, refined and contained. Lemon and grapefruit, citrus-driven palate, tense and finely-tailored, and frisky with acidity. A really superb, pure style of Chardonnay.2017 - 2024
This is stunning for a quality Chardonnay selling for less than $40. Stone fruit with hints of almonds and cashew with that leesy nougat character. Has such a bright and taut crunchy acidity bringing a little minerality into the palate. Finishes with a slightly juicy feel in the month.
Here’s a wine that delivers full Margaret River Chardonnay flavour without going over the top. It’s juicy sweet and flinty, fresh pineapple drizzled with lime, some oatmeal and almond, and a tight finish of excellent length. There’s nothing not to like, and everything to enjoy.2016 - 2022
'Predominantly estate-grown on the Stevens Road and Lagan Vineyards, Gingin clone, hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, and wild yeast-fermented in French oak (21% new), matured and stirred for 9 months. There is an inevitability about the very high quality of the Xanadu wines these days; thus this very intense and powerful, yet perfectly delineated and balanced wine is no surprise, nor is its extreme length.'
Bright, light yellow colour and a subtle, fresh and very clean aroma showing some nut and marzipan nuances. The wine is very intense and refined on the palate: bright and pristine, concentrated and crystalline with purity and length. Gorgeous wine. Very tight, refined and compact, with marvellous persistence.
'A really pure expression of chardonnay with winemaker Glenn Goodall not using malolactic fermentation. It has had some lees stirring to generate complexity and richness and for what is a lightly framed wine it carries plenty. It's creamy with balancing savoury character and a precise fine acid taking it to a very long finish.'
