Cracka Review

Ashbrook Estate continue to be one of the quietest over achievers in the Margaret River turning out a consistently high standard of wines that typify the region. Verdelho like this should be celebrated more often as it’s even more suitable with Asian food than other white styles thanks to its high-octane tropical flavours. It shows passionfruit, superb fruit vibrancy and gentle cleansing acids.

Winemaker's Notes

2016 Vintage: The 2016 growing season at Ashbrook was typified by warm sunny days and cool nights with no harsh weather events recorded. Three inches of rain two weeks prior to harvest gave the vines a healthy boost and resulted in no disease pressure at all due to Ashbrook’s predominantly lyre trellis system. A bumper and lengthy Marri blossom also meant Silver-eye bird damage was negligible which was well received by the vineyard team after a hectic 2015 season juggling netting. All said and done the white varieties were harvested at optimum flavour ripeness. Yields were slightly below average but the quality was impeccable. An inch of rain before the red harvest was again beneficial for the vines and grapes were picked in perfect condition. Yields were of average size with the 2016 vintage characterised by flavours developing at lower sugar levels across all varieties.

Vineyard: After collecting cuttings during pruning season from one of the oldest Vineyards in the Swan Valley north east of Perth in1976 the “Old Block” was planted on Ashbrook Estate. Due to its popularity a second block was planted in 1987 which is affectionately known as the “Verdelho over the creek”. Originally all VSP grown, the majority was converted to cane pruned Lyre trellis in 2010 with immediate and brilliant results. Coupled with the application of composted mulch, for the past 9 years, the Vineyard shows remarkable health.

Winemaking: A vibrant, unwooded style of Verdelho with lashings of fruit aromas on the nose marrying with tropical fruit flavors and hints of spice on the palate. The wine stays focused and finishes crisp and dry yet has a powerful and refreshing length that makes this wine the perfect accompaniment to spicy, full flavoured dishes. Famous for its natural acidity, this variety ages beautifully. Cellaring for more than five years rewards with complex spice and honeysuckle and developing nutty and toasty characters.

2016 Ashbrook Estate Verdelho

Expert Reviews

Ray Jordan (2012 Vintage) says
Always one of the best WA verdelhos. Once again the fresh zippy vibrant fruit is a feature of the wine. Tropical fruit with a subtle spicy influence. Long flavoursome palate with a lush middle tightened with a crisp fine acid to finish.

Pale straw-green; a compelling blend of citrus, spice and tropical fruit comes through strongly on the bouquet and palate alike, supported on the palate by perfectly balanced acidity. Margaret River verdelho has always had a little bit extra.

Tangy and juicy, citrus woven through the tropical fruit inherent in the variety; cleansing acidity on the finish increases the length of a very good verdelho.

An aromatic tropical/banana bouquet, then a palate that opens as a reflection of the bouquet before quickly moving on to delicious lemony acidity, which gives great thrust to the mouthfeel. As good as they come.

Ray Jordan (2008 Vintage) says
Remarkably delicate yet intensely flavoured Verdelho showing all the tropical fruit passion fruit nuances you expect, with a little bit of that distinctive subtle egg carton smell that adds a degree of complexity. Fragrant and fine, with a piercing sustaining acidity.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
A tropical fruit bouquet; the palate has good length and abundant character, offering passionfruit with a squeeze of citrus; a model for other verdelhos to follow.
Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008
James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says
Medium yellow-green; the bouquet is highly aromatic but has slightly reductive/armpit aromas. The palate is full, but very sweet, in uncompromising cellar-door style.
