2016 Best's Great Western Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Great Western and Riesling - it's a little known super combination this one, one that yields pretty smart wines, juicy wines even, often carrying a little bit of residual sweetness and built in a style that is lean and crisp but also with a dash more generosity too. Old Henry Best would be proud of this we think.

Winemaker's Notes

Colour: Pale straw with a green and gold hue

Bouquet: Lifted aromas of kaffir lime and honeysuckle with a background of red apple and musky spices

Palate: Intense lime flavours with a slippery mouthfeel and a fresh mineral finish

Cellaring: The Rieslings of Best’s have a proven ability to mature gracefully for 20 years or more. This example is no exception and its youthful freshness is a good sign for its long life in the cellar. It will gather complex toasty aromas and flavours as the years pass

Food pairing: Enjoy with a Moreton Bay Bug Ravioli

Alc/vol: 11.5%

2016 Best's Great Western Riesling

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
The mother vines of today's vineyard are in the Nursery Block, planted in 1866. An ultimately juicy lime essence burst of flavour on the palate will make the wine irresistible, and its early consumption mock the long term cellaring potential.

Oily botrytis tropical edges with rose tropical fruit aromas. The easy drinking with tropical fruit from botrytis and a lick of residual sugar with ripe peach and cleansing acidity. Drink with Thai food.

A textured, chalky riesling with an evolved, toasty bouquet of citrusy fruit with buttery, spicy and herbal undertones. Forward and quite juicy, it becomes leaner and more edgy towards a slightly angular finish of zesty acids and halbtrocken sweetness. Not quite in perfect balance.

Light straw-green; fragrant, floral/blossom aromas are followed by an exceptionally intense palate, with wonderful drive to its lime, lemon and apple fruit; has revelled in the cool conditions.

Nick Stock (2011 Vintage) says
A sensational result in a cool year; this has ripened through to more exotic territory with white nectarine and peach, some citrus and mineral _ almost tropical hints in the mix. The palate has impressive concentration and punch, really juicy and fluid, thoroughly ripe and very, very attractive. Will age nicely to boot!

Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
Almost exaggerated in its intensity, this rather Germanic riesling needs time to settle. Scented with a floral perfume of pear, apple, white peach and mango, it also reveals a hint of youthful spiciness. Marginally sweet, its intense presence of melon, mango and stonefruit is long and gentle, drilling down towards a bright, juicy finish of refreshing acidity.

More about flavour than finesse and the hallmark acidity of the variety. Lime and florals mouth filling with citrus flavours and detailed complexity of acid fruit texture and flavours in the finish.

Light straw-green; highly scented and flowery with wild flower blossom aromas, and the palate ranges through apple to citrus to passionfruit. The continental climate is good news.

A lively, modestly halbtrocken-sweet expression of riesling whose fresh pear-like aromas of musk and lemon rind are lifted by suggestions of lavender and spice, with nutty, mineral undertones. It's pristine and juicy, with a penetrative, juicy core of apple, pear and lemon flavour finishing long and fluffy, with with a slight sweetness and bright acidity.

Marries generosity of fruit flavour with a tight, focused finish; the flavours are of ripe citrus, verging on tropical, and the wine will develop smoothly over the next few years.

A deliciously focused and generous young riesling whose vibrant, pristine and penetrative flavours of lime juice, lemon, crunchy apple and pear are lifted by a scent of bath powder and white flowers and neatly tied together by a fresh, bitey cut of citrusy acidity. Long and juicy, it's underpinned by a fine chalkiness.

Ripe and juicy, with slightly confectionery lemon rind, lime juice, pear and apple-like fruit. Its lifted floral aromas precede a smooth, tangy and intensely flavoured palate of pleasing freshness and crispness, but with a lightly candied aspect that might reduce its longevity. It finishes long, fresh and racy, with clean acids and a lingering presence of powdery phenolics.

A fresh and shapely riesling whose floral perfume of pear, apple and lime juice reveals a musky aspect. Smooth and supple, It's long and tangy, delivering a juicy cut of spotlessly clean pear, apple and lemony flavour over a fine chassis of chalky phenolics. It finishes long and bright, with limey acids.

A fine, stylish and tight-knit riesling whose penetrative limey aromas also suggest rose petals, tropical fruit and lemon sherbet, its pristine and refreshing palate is pierced by flavours of apple, pear, lemon and lime before a persistent finish of crisp acids. There's some fine, chalky phenolics and a lingering mineral note.

Modern, stylish riesling with Austrian-like elements of texture, dryness and tightness. Its delicate floral aromas of lemon and lime, apple and pear precede an elegant, shapely palate whose generous middle fleshy core is bound by a crisp and slightly powdery mineral finish. Some lees-derived flavours and texture contribute to its complexity and charm

Light green-yellow; a clean, fresh aromatic lime blossom bouquet leads into a delicate, lively, lime-accented fore- to mid-palate, with a faintly dusty/minerally aftertaste. Very good, though, and the best Riesling for some time.
