cracka review

At the top of the South Island of New Zealand is Blenheim, where the Catalina Sounds wines hail from. These are elegant, cool and collected styles that show how well Pinot Gris is developing as an alternative to the ubiquitous Sauvignon Blanc. This is much more textured and layered with a creamy mouthfeel, pure, pear fruit expression and naturally balanced acids. A perfect food wine, pair it with pork or fish for best results.

expert reviews

Louise Radman (2008 Vintage) says
Pure varietal pear & musky honeysuckle florals. Tempting flavours of glacŽ pear, bright lemon, cinnamon & orange syrup in the mouth with a clean crisp finish.

winemaker's notes

This special single vineyard Gris hails from New Zealand’s famous Marlborough wine region. A dry white, it’s full of pure quince, spiced pear, peach and floral flavours that continue to build. Subtle use of oak gives you a layered and well-rounded mouth-feel balanced by fresh acidity and mineral notes. A beautiful drink on it’s own, otherwise it will make an exceptional partner to Asian cuisine or white poultry dishes.

Vinification: Hand-picked fruit (1/4 & 6/4/16) was whole bunch pressed and then two fermentation techniques were used. 88% was fermented slowly (almost 3 months’ duration) with high solids in stainless steel, building weight whilst preserving aromatics. The balance 12% was fermented warm in French oak puncheons. All parcels remained un-sulphured on heavy lees until blending in early July, building savouriness, aromatic interest and a strong textural element into the wine.

Aroma: The wine has appealing aromatics of pear, peach, honey and beeswax.

Palate: Weighty but refreshingly balanced and cleansing palate.

Food matching: Lovely to drink on its own, it will also match beautifully with pork belly, quail or other poultry, and Asian themed dishes.

Vintage notes: 2016 experienced modest crops for Pinot Gris, with the bonus of excellent concentration in the resulting wines. The 2015/16 growing season was warm and dry, enabling the Pinot Gris to be picked with lovely flavour at relatively low sugar levels. This has ensured that the wine maintains a lightness and freshness despite the richness that the variety inherently possesses and also has been purposely built into it.
