cracka review

Here is another stunning beast from 5 star rated Clare Valley wonder, Crabtree. From an excellent vintage in the Clare, this wines delivers exactly what Riesling drinkers demand! Lemon and lime blends in seamlessly with a subtle minerality, which Riesling freaks will keep coming back to for many years to come.

expert reviews

Tyson Stelzer (2012 Vintage) says
An eye-catching electric green hue pre-empts a riesling of notable restraint and purity of focused lime and granny smith apple perfume. A tense, honed palate is defined by pure, pristine lime fruit. Give it time in the cellar to uncoil.

Rob Geddes MW (2012 Vintage) says
Generous rich aromas typical of Watervale Riesling with floral, fresh cut minted pineapple fruit salad aromas, with subtle spice. The silky palate is classic to the region and the vintage with pineapple depth and length, fleshy and silky with a very good balance and length, fine and morish.

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Bright straw-green; there is an extra dimension of fruit complexity to booth the bouquet and palate compared to its Hilltop sibling, yet it retains its elegance and lightness of step, acidity providing gentle restraint. Greatness waits around the corner.

James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
Has more tension, focus and drive than Hilltop Vineyard, although the character of the fruit flavours is similar until the emphatic finish and its lime sherbet.

Rob Geddes MW (2011 Vintage) says
Pristine fresh red apple, apple pie and talc aromas. The palate offers a creamy lees edge to the up front juicy fruit and lemon in the middle flavours showing Watervale character and good drink now.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Bright quartz-green; the intense bouquet is packed with lime and spice/skin aromas, the palate pure and focused lime flowing smoothly across the tongue and through to the long finish. Estate-grown; top gold medal Adelaide Wine Show '10. A fascinating pair (this and the Hilltop Riesling), given the same alcohol origins, both high quality and both quite soft (in relative terms).

Rob Geddes MW (2010 Vintage) says
Clean and precise in their flavours finishing dry and bright they hit the honey lime wax and lemon maturity quite quickly.

Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says

Very pure and precise lime citrus nose with fragrant, lifted aromas and a really scintillating clarity here, some bath powder too. The palate boasts intensity and real power, very impressive through the middle, and shapes up in piercing style for a racy, lime-tinged finish.

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Like the Hilltop, estate-grown, but here there is greater intensity to the highly floral bouquet and the juicy citrus fruits of the palate. Gold medal Adelaide Wine Show '09 thoroughly deserved.

This Watervale riesling is showing plenty of intensity here in 2008. The nose is all finesse and sports restrained citrus aromas. Really even across the palate, nicely honed texture, austere and piercing drive.

Clean, firm lemon and lime zest aromas, then a classic regional palate; picked 15 Feb and has excellent length and focus to the pure varietal fruit expression.

A solid wine with plenty of ripe fruit depth in a citrus spectrum; moderately long finish.

A complex, tangy mix of mineral, lime and herb; excellent length and structure.

James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says
Floral, lime blossom aromas to open with, then rich, luscious, mouthfilling lime and tropical fruit; at the rich end of the vintage style, and totally seductive.
Australian Wine Companion 2005 2004

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Pale straw-green; a very youthful bouquet with flinty, minerally/slatey aromas with an echo of apple are followed by a crisp, clean and balanced palate. In terms of flavour, the wine is too young to even crawl, let alone walk, and is difficult to point. Having moved to a Stelvin closure (and a label upgrade) there is every reason to suppose the wine will richly repay cellaring.
Australian Wine Companion 2004 2003
90
James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Light green-yellow; a firm but highly aromatic bouquet of lime, apple and slate is followed by a palate with exceptional intensity, length and depth to the flavours, which replicate those of the bouquet. Multiple trophies at the 2001 Clare Valley Regional Wine Show, including Best Wine of Show. However, some variation has been noticed; the wine is finished with a cork, not Stelvin.

winemaker's notes

The Crabtree Watervale Riesling is produced from our estate grown fruit in the very heart of the Watervale sub region of the Clare Valley.

The fruit was handpicked and carefully selected to retain the freshness and punchy citrus fruit flavour that Watervale is renowned. With lifted aromatics of lemon zest and lime citrus spice, our estate Riesling is fruit concentrated and balanced with finely textured, juicy acidity. Sealed with a screw cap to ensure integrity of product, with careful cellaring this wine should mature gracefully for eight+ years. Serve with South Australian Kinkawooka mussels and blue swimmer crab pasta.
