Cracka Review

This is a masterful Chardonnay with layer after layer of fruit flavour from citrus and white peach to alluring toasted almonds and even a touch of charcuterie. Bright, young and juicy with a superb line of acidity, this is a great Australian Chardonnay - make no mistake!

Winemaker's Notes

Vineyard: The A5 Vineyard was planted in 1976 to a clone called P58. It is a gentle sloping vineyard facing predominantly south-west. It produces quite fine boned Chardonnay with terrific ageing potential.

Appearance: Pale with a green edge.

Bouquet: Fine, restrained, lifted florals and citrus, quite nutty.

Palate: Finely woven texture, savoury edge, drying phenolics, energetic and composed.

Vintage Conditions: Early season but quite mild and dry. Fine Chardonnay with lovely citrus and florals.

Winemaking: Grapes are hand picked, whole bunch crushed, pressed and allowed to settle overnight. The turbid juice is then racked to older French oak casks where it undergoes natural fermentation. Lees are stirred in late autumn and a little in winter and then left to rest until the finishing stages.

Food Match: These more full bodied styles match well with:
Creamy pasta - white wine and cream sauces; mushroom risotto
Chicken - grilled chicken; chicken caesar salad
Hard cheeses - parmesan; roumano; vintage gouda

Alc/vol: 12.8%

2016 De Bortoli Section A5 YV Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
A model of restraint, in terms of both its fruit and oak expression; white peach, melon and fig are circumscribed by citrussy acidity, French oak whispering from the wings of the stage.

James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2015, Aug 2014.
Tyson Stelzer (2012 Vintage) says
Introducing the new era of De Bortoli Reserve, in which the name of the plot rightfully takes the limelight. The old vines of this block deliver intensity and power with undeviating focus and restraint.
- Tyson Stelzer, Wine Business Magazine, Jan 2014.
