The De Bortoli team sure know a hell of a lot about making fine Australian Pinot Noir. If there is better value Australian Pinot Noir on the market I can’t find it with this perfumed, red fruit example with a little earth and spice absolutely top drawer.

Winemaker's Notes

Appearance: Bright medium red.

Bouquet: Fragrant, complex. Red fruits, violets, forest, spice.

Palate: Textured, elegant, gentle tannins. Flavours of cherry, red fruits & background spice. Soft and supple, balanced by a plump finish.

Vintage conditions: 2016 was warm and dry throughout most of the growing season. Timely rainfall in late January settled things down and the harvest was mild but quite early.

Winemaking: Fruit for this blend is grown mainly in Dixons Creek, Tarrawarra and Yarra Glen. The grapes are both hand and machine harvested with a percentage of the hand harvested used for whole bunch inclusion. A combination of winemaking techniques are used to produce a final blend with complexity and balance. These include cold maceration prior to fermentation, inclusion of whole bunches and warm fermentation at 30˚C to 32˚C. Minimal handling and filtration is adopted to preserve fruit flavour.

Cellaring: Enjoy now or cellar for the next two to three years.

Food match: These lighter styles match well with:
White meat - Roast pork, chicken or duck
Hard cheeses - parmesan, romano or vintage gouda

Alc/vol: 13.5%

Bright, clear red; the fragrant bouquet has perfumed red fruits on parade, and the fresh red fruits come bursting out of the blocks on the palate, given even greater presence by a twitch of forest on the finish. Light-bodied, to be sure, but it doesn’t need more of anything.

Very good vintage and it shows. The perfect introduction to pinot noir, if that’s what you need, or the perfect everyday drinker. 

Dry cherry, red and black, minor amount of twigginess, nutty aftertaste, maybe some bitterness. Textural, as you’d expect from De Bortoli, slight smoky herbiness. Complex and attractive far beyond its station.

The recommended price for this wine is $12, but I walked into a shop and bought it for $9.95, a remarkable price for a pinot noir. 2007 RELEASE There's quite a deal of smoky flavour here. That said, the wine carries these flavours well, with a mix of bright cherries and chocolate flavour (almost like Turkish delight) and lots of juicy acidity. The tannins are bold for a wine of this price, but necessary to keep the wine intact. I would not cellar this; those smoky flavours will come to dominate. For now, it's lovely drinking, DRINK 2008.
