Easy drinking and toothsome is pretty much the theme with this bright, grapey, spritzy number from Deakin Estate. Aromas of apples, grapes and musk florals leap out of the glass, whilst the palate is sweet and delicately fizzy, with some lemony acidity cleaning up the finish. It's great value, and more of a dessert wine than a table wine, so try it with some cupcakes.

Winemaker's Notes

Vinification: Muscat Gordo Blanco grapes were picked when firm and juicy with explosive Muscat flavours. Only half the grape sugar was fermented, resulting in a low alcohol, light bodied wine. An aromatic yeast was used to accentuate the fruit character, and very gentle processing followed to preserve as much of the natural spritz as possible.

Cellaring potential: Best enjoyed young. Serve chilled.

Style: Light, fruity, fresh.

Taste: Sweet tropical fruit, green apple, hints of lime and musk stick.

Drink with: Fresh fruit salad, desserts, brunch.

Alc/vol: 7.0%

Cheap, fresh, sweet and giggly - if you're desperate and dateless you'll find some consolation here. At just 4.5% alcohol you could polish off the bottle in a night and still drive home!

This is one of the very few super-low alcohol examples that has intensity of flavour, and more importantly considerable length. Its high residual sugar (100 grammes per litre) is largely masked by its low pH of 2.92 rather than its middle of the road (6.5 grammes per litre) of acidity.

Two wines really caught my eye at a recent visit to Deakin Estate. The first was the 2009 Moscato, weighing in at a remarkably low 4.5 per cent alcohol. That's low even by moscato standards. And yet it works: it's fresh and musky, sherberty and delicious. If you like the moscato style, and in particular the lack of alcohol punch, then you've found yourself a bargain.

Delightful example of this increasingly popular style that originated from Italy. The key is freshness, a little spritz and a little sweetness and often a lower than usual alcohol. This has a smidgen more sweetnemss than some but doesnt cloy.
