2016 Harewood Estate Porongurup Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

The Porongurup wine region is a pretty magical place. It's a rocky outcrop located just north of Albany (in the cool depths of southern WA) that is fast becoming known as a great place to grow grapes. What makes the Porongurup region special is that it's all granite, with the northern slopes then an ideal combination of fabulous decomposed granite soils and a perfect northerly aspect. Grapegrowing heaven (if just a little dry). Fittingly, the grapes that come off said site - the Riesling in particular - tend to be special. Special in a minerally, slatey and wonderfully intense form that makes them stand out like a beacon in a lineup of similar wines. That's the way this wine rolls too, with a sprinkle of magic to the palate that is pure dry Riesling heaven. We can't stress enough just how classically formed this Riesling is.

Winemaker's Notes

The grapes for this wine were sourced from one of the original plantings of Riesling in the Porongurup ranges of Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region.

Only the finest, more pristine, “free-run” juice was used in the production of this wine resulting in a palate of outstanding finesse, free from the harsh, phenolic characters and deeper colours associated with grape pressings.

A long, cool ferment in stainless steel tanks, minimal fining and the use of screw caps are all further steps towards capturing the inherent delicacy of this cool climate variety.

A brilliant, exceptionally pale straw colour with youthful green tinges.

The wine exhibits fine floral and citrus notes enhanced by an underlying flinty vibrancy.

An elegant, seamless palate with initial flavours of green apple and grapefruit leading to a crisp mid-palate with an underlying slate character finishing with classic mouth-watering lemons and limes. The fine structure is testament to the care taken during this wines production.

Bright, light straw-green; has the hallmark effortless balance of Porongurup riesling, so at ease with itself you can underestimate its capacity to unfurl its intense, complex, lime and mineral aromas and flavours over many years. From a single 40-year-old vineyard.
