2016 Jim Barry Watervale Riesling

Cracka Rating

Winemaker's Notes

This wine is a pale straw in the glass.

The nose has a fantastic lift of punchy lemon sherbet, bath salts, orange blossom and freshly grated ginger, enhanced by quintessential Watervale Riesling musk.

A wine of great line and drive, the palate has lashings of flavour with elements of lemon curd, grapefruit, guava and nashi pear. The palate over-delivers on flavour, with soda-like minerality, and provides a generous wine with extraordinary length.

Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2013 Vintage) says
A fragrant, pristine riesling whose chalky perfume of pear, appleand lime juice precedes an intense, generously flavoured palate whose ripe, juicy flavours overlie a fine dustiness, finishing with length, focus and a gentle but fine acidity.
The Australian Wine Annual 2014 Edition
Nick Stock (2012 Vintage) says
A great vintage of a classic wine, which has lovely Watervale talcum powder and lime and grapefruit citrus fragrance, sweet perfume and good concentration here. The palate is a vibrant, clean and crisp affair, with brilliant acid spark and a lively, juicy and powerful edge. Racy and poised to age very, very well.

Jeremy Oliver (2012 Vintage) says
A very sound riesling of structure and intensity, with a delightful purity about its fruit. A perfume of fresh lime juice, pear and apple is scented with white flowers and talcum powder, with a suggestion of lemon zest. Full-flavoured, with a long chalky palate of citrusy fruit, it finishes taut and austere, with a lingering presence of lemon pulp.
The Australian Wine Annual 2013
Rob Geddes MW (2012 Vintage) says
The Clare Valleys largest riesling grower delivers a pineapple like richness with rose and lemon in the back ground. The full flavoured palate is round and generous in texture with lingering flavours. Serve with scampi.

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Pale green-quartz; a classically structured and balanced Riesling, already with plenty of zesty lime flavours underpinned by good acidity; will develop very well over years. Its structure is particularly impressive.

Nick Stock (2011 Vintage) says
One of the stalwarts of the Clare Valley riesling brigade, this 2011 Jim Barry offers up the typical dose of talc and fresh-squeezed lime juice; some gentle, spicy complexity in here too. The palate's dry, juicy and soft, bringing lime-citrus and light-peach flavours together in effortless, fresh form.

Straw- green; not a hair out of place with this excellent expression of Watervale, with mouthwatering lime/lemon juice flavours crosscut by acidity; a long and clean finish and aftertaste. Excellent value.

Tyson Stelzer (2010 Vintage) says
Refreshing to find bargain riesling that is holding its freshness extremely well - just the thing to carry you through until the 11s land. Crunchy apple, tart lemons, tight structure.

Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says
This superb-value riesling has a slightly grassy edge, some fresh green garden herbs and a neat lime juice aroma. There's a dry, crisp and powerful wine on the palate, lime juice all the way, even turning a little steely through the finish.
The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010 2009
James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Pale and bright straw-green; the delicate, fresh bouquet has lime and lemon characters that are precisely repeated on the palate; delicious now, but give it a few years to grow.

Rob Geddes MW (2009 Vintage) says
This style has changed and is now picked early and is all the better for it.

High-quality riesling at its price, with abundant citrus and herb fruit on the mid-palate, the long finish driven by lemon juice acidity
Australian Wine Companion 2010 2009
James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Is particularly well-balanced in a generous mode; lime and tropical fruit in abundance; good length.
Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008
Jeremy Oliver (2007 Vintage) says
Floral, lightly tropical riesling aromas of lemon rind and orange peel have a lifted spicy aspect. Broad and angular, long and tangy, its palate of slightly sour-edged lime juice and lemon finishes austere and steely, with a hint of spiky acidity.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
A clean, but slightly closed bouquet; abundant flavour in the citrus spectrum; perks up on a delicate, refreshing finish.
Australian Wine Companion 2008 2007
Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
A vibrant, floral and schisty perfume of penetrative citrusy aroma precedes a round, juicy and generous palate of genuine length and freshness. It's long and refreshing, with slightly confectionary fruit, a lemon sherbet texture and a crisp, crunchy finish that reveals just a hint of sweetness.

Clean, lemon/lime aromas and similar, generous citrus flavours; good balance and line.

Spicy floral and slightly candied, its lemony aromas and tangy juicy palate of lime/apple flavour culminate in a clean, crunchy finish of refreshing acids. It's long, fresh and tightly focused, with pleasing shape and generosity.

Rather a Germanic expression of Clare Valley riesling whose minty, almost nettle-like aromas of apple and lime juice precede a long, smooth and mineral palate of shape and elegance. Lemony acids neatly bind its lively expression of pear and apple flavour, while it finishes long and vibrant

Jeremy Oliver (2003 Vintage) says
Approachable and fragrant riesling whose floral bouquet of lime, lemon and wet slate reveal a hint of estery, candied citrus aroma Tangy, juicy and spicy, it's forward and soft, with lemon candy and baby powder flavours bound by soft acids.

Bright light green-yellow; the smooth bouquet has sweet lime juice aromas; the palate is fresh, well-balanced with attractive lime and lemon flavours, and has a lingering, almost silky finish. Should develop quickly.
Australian Wine Companion 2003 2002
James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says
Medium to full yellow-green; there is plenty of weight and depth to the bouquet with a mix of lime, apple and mineral aromas. A big, solidly built palate with abundant flavour, albeit not much finesse. Excellent short-term drinking.
