    cracka review

If you like your Pinot Gris rich and medium-sweet, then this wine is squarely aimed at you! Smells of pear drops, ripe peaches, honey, lemon and subtle marmalade decorate the nose, whilst the palate is sweet and unctuous, with pear, spiced honey and citrus flavours, a velvety mouthfeel, and a zip of lemony acidity cleaning up the finish. Great with spicy food, but would be good with a fruit salad, too.

    Raymond Chan (2016 Vintage) says
Full, even, light golden-hued yellow colour, a little lighter edged. The nose is full, round and deeply packed with opulently ripe apricot and yellow stone fruit and pear aromas entwined with honey, exotic florals and nutty elements, revealing an underlying minerally freshness. Medium-sweet to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a lively and bright core of, rich, opulent, honied stone fruit flavours unfolding a layering of exotic florals and tropical fruits, and subtle notes of flint, nuts and minerals. The mouthfeel is luscious and decadent, with fine phenolic textures underlining the fruit, and balanced acidity lending vitality. The wine carries to a rich, long, honied finish. This is a rich, opulent medium-sweet Pinot Gris with flavours of yellow stone fruits, tropical fruits, florals an honey on a luscious and lively palate. Match with mildly spicy Middle Eastern and Asian fare over the next 4+ years.
Bob Campbell MW (2016 Vintage) says
A moderately sweet Pinot Gris, although the sweetness is perfectly balanced by fresh acidity. Together the sweetness and acidity create an appealing tension and dryish mouth-tingling finish. An unusual and distinctive wine, with a mix of tree fruit and citrus flavours.

    Nick Stock (2012 Vintage) says
This hails from the tiny Ponui Island, just off the eastern coast of Waiheke Island. It has plenty of concentrated fruits in the tropical and yellow stone fruit spectrum; really intense and mouthwatering. The palate has plenty of sweetness in play and delivers a lingering orange, peach and mango finish.

    Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
An exotic pinot gris that makes a complex impression, with impressive ripeness on offer: a swathe of mango and stone fruits, and perhaps some botrytis. The palate's soft and supple, decidedly off-dry, and delivers peach and papaya flavours in a smooth, easy-to-love style.

    winemaker's notes

Exiled: Named in tribute to Napoleon’s final place of exile where he was banished after his defeat at Waterloo. Exiled is awarded to our most prized Pinot Gris, made exclusively from the St Helena clone grown on our vineyards.

Vintage: Vintage 2016 began with a dry, settled spring resulting in great flowering and a corresponding excellent fruit set. The settled weather continued up to the New Year when wet weather patterns became prevalent which continued into the harvest months. Careful attention to detail in the vineyard paid off with astonishing fruit quality across all varieties in what was undoubtedly a very challenging harvest.

Vineyards: 2016 saw the first crop come off our grafted Waiheke Island Pinot Gris vineyards; Cliffs, the Beast, Gorse Laneway and Lone Kauri. They complement our Paradise vineyard on Ponui Island which was planted in 2006. All of the vineyards for the Exiled Pinot Gris are planted in the St Helena clone, a beautiful bright pink clone with long loose bunches with intense flavours and aromas of ginger and mandarin.

Winemaking: All fruit is hand-picked then crushed and pressed before settling in tank for 48 hours before being racked with light solids into tank for fermentation. A mixture of un-inoculated and cultured yeast ferments are used with each vineyard fermenting slowly until the desired balance of acid, tannin and sugar is reached. The wines are then chilled to below zero to stop the fermentation before blending, the blend is held at low temperatures in the cellar until bottling to retain as much of the natural carbon dioxide as possible.

Tasting note: The 2016 Exiled shows an intensity of the St Helena clone with masses of ginger and citrus fruit on the nose and a palate that is richly textured yet elegantly structured. Exiled 2016 manages to balance an abundance of fruit and natural sugar with fresh vibrant acidity and a minerality towards the end which is further enhanced by natural carbon dioxide and fruit tannin giving a satisfyingly long dry thirst quenching finish.

Region: Waiheke Island & Ponui Island.

    Alc/vol: 12.5%
