Expert Reviews

Campbell Mattinson (2015 Vintage) says
Old vine shiraz out of the Barossa. Sweet and ripe. This is luscious red wine drinking. Tar, honey, baked plums and dried herbs. It loads up the palate with flavour, all sweet and loose and delicious.

Strong red-purple; the bouquet is full of promise, with dark fruits and quality oak both having their say, and the medium- to full-bodied palate does not disappoint; gently spicy blackberry fruit runs through to the back-palate, where fine, ripe yet savoury tannins come to the fore, investing the wine with class and balance. The cork is no doubt for the benefit of the US market.

Impenetrable colour; an opulent array of essency black fruits, dark chocolate, mulled spices and mocha; the palate is unctuous, showing deep levels of concentrated sweet fruit, followed by chewy tannins to conclude; a rich wine, perfect for a cold night.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2008 Vintage) says
It's big and overtly sweet but it has some finesse too. This is a very good wine. It tastes of toast, raspberries, earth and hay, and both its intensity and freshness is quite compelling. For all its power, though, it slides easily through your mouth as you swallow - it doesn't have a lot of tannin, but it has a lot of class. Beautiful, modern Barossa shiraz.

Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says
Massena has found its groove and this shiraz shows the innate power of the Barossa Valley presented in |aysen Collins and Dan Standish's soulful style. Ripe black fruits and gentle, sweet, earthy complexity, sinewy tannins and a sweet sweep of oak through the finish all add up to convincing style. Already very approachable, there's plenty more to come.
