2016 Mount Langi Ghiran Billi Billi Pinot Gris

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Here's a Pinot Gris made in the fuller, fleshier style that would be great with some seafood. Aromas of ripe pears, red apples and tropical fruit salad drift out of the glass, whilst the palate is more medium-bodied and quite rich, with spiced pear flavours, friendly acidity, and a fresh, juicy finish.

Winemaker's Notes

Winemaking notes: Mount Langi Ghiran is a pioneer of cool climate winemaking in Australia, and was one of the first wineries to plant Pinot Gris in the early 90’s. Billi Billi was an Aboriginal King who lived near the property, and owned much of the surrounding land. The creek close to the vineyard was named after King Billi Billi. This wine is created in his honour, and reflects the heritage of the region. Wholly sourced from the Langi Estate vineyard, these Pinot Gris grapes were harvested on the 12th February to capture its flavour profile and optimum acid structure. The result is a wine that shows great varietal characters, bold texture coupled with a fine acid structure.

Colour: Bright deep straw with green hues.

Nose: Fragrant fresh lime, with spiced pear and subtle white florals.

Palate: An intensely varietal wine with those aromas of spiced pear dominating the palate. Depth and texture are persistent though the mid palate, with honey notes and zesty lime characters adding further complexity. The fine acid structure completes this wine, delivering balance and length.

Alc/vol: 13.9%

Nick Stock (2011 Vintage) says
A little tropical thread here, hints of sweet apricot and marzipan adding attractive complexity to the mix of ripe pear and floral aromas. The palate has soft, fleshy appeal, delivering pear and custard apple flavour. Balanced; drink now.

With a crisp, refreshing citrus zest structure and a palate depth built around peach, pear and wild honey flavours, this is a great value Pinot Grigio which is ready to perform.

A faint touch of straw ex the grape is no issue; a junior brother to Cliff Edge, pleasant but little more.
