If you want a guaranteed crowd-pleasing wine then the Norfolk Rise Merlot is going to kick goals every time. It’s a wine you don’t need to question, it just delivers medium bodied class in the glass every time. It’s elegantly framed by cherry, chocolate and hints of vanilla that follow onto the generous palate that shows good length and soft tannins. This wine tastes alarmingly good with barbecued lamb chops.

Winemaker's Notes

2016 Merlot: This early release fruit driven Merlot shows a lovely purity of fruit with minimal winemaking intervention. An expressive nose full of red fruit, violets and plums gives way to a smooth palate with cocoa powder tannins and a spice medley on the finish. Enjoy on a Sunday afternoon with friends with Robe Dairy Fromage Blanc on freshly baked sourdough. Delicious!

The Vineyard: Situated in the heart of the cool climate Mount Benson region, the Norfolk Rise Vineyard is planted on 130 hectares of undulating coastal hills. Within 5 kilometres of the ocean at 37 degrees south of the equator, our climate and long slow ripening period is perfectly suited for natural acid retention, allowing us to produced balanced delicate wines of the highest calibre.

Winemaking: Picked off our 100% estate vineyards in March the fruit was crushed and de-stemmed into stainless steel fermenters. With a quick, cool ferment using Bordeaux yeasts and moderate extraction we have achieved this medium bodied, fruit driven style showing the best of our Mount Benson terroir.

Colour: Vibrant ruby red.

Bouquet: Stone fruit, raspberry, strawberry, tomato vine and perfume.

Palate: Soft and velvety with cocoa powder tannins and a spice medley to finish.

Ageing Potential: Will be enjoyed well into 2022.

Food Suggestions: Duck with summer fennel and orange salad or fresh sourdough spread with Robe Dairy Fromage Blanc.

If you’re on the lookout for a sub $20 Merlot, this would be good place to start. It has some grunt. It’s not just about simple sweet fruit and not much else, though it is tasty with berried flavour. There’s tannin. There’s spice. There’s the kind of ‘chewiness’ that works a treat at the dinner table. And while there are gum nut and twiggy spice almost-bitter notes, they serve to give the wine some breadth, some interest, some savoury appeal. This shows a lot of “affordable” Merlots how it’s done.
