2016 Petaluma White Label Sauvignon Blanc

Petaluma is committed to producing the very best wines from South Australia’s most distinguished viticultural areas. Sauvignon Blanc fruit from seven small Adelaide Hills vineyards was picked in mid February 2016 and delivered to our winery at Woodside.
The Adelaide Hills received wonderful winter rain in 2015, before a really dry spring and then the hottest December since records were kept. As happens sometimes in very dry years, the region experienced a devastating frost on the 27th of November, amazingly late. The frost caused widespread fruit destruction through large parts of the Hills, most notably around Lobethal and Gumeracha. Fortunately our vineyards suffered very little damage. After such a dry spring and hot December, the Hills received around 80 mm of rain in the week of the 22nd of January which freshened everything up beautifully. More rain followed on the 2nd of February, and this persisted until the 16th. Crop levels were generous and all our Sauvignon Blanc fruit was off the vine by the 19th of February.
The individual parcels were fermented separately, 87% in stainless steel tanks and 13%in new and one use French oak barriques (225 litres) and hogsheads (300 litres). At the completion of the alcoholic fermentation the wines in oak were topped and sealed. This portion remained on yeast lees in oak until blending. The wine in stainless steel tanks were cold settled and just rested on yeast lees until blending. The components were then blended in late May, before cold settling and filtration to bottle in June.
The 2016 Petaluma Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc displays fresh tropical fruits and exotic herbaceousness with crunchy lemon and lime. Lovely persistence on the palate combined with grassy zestiness and a hint of gooseberry signal this Sauvignon Blanc as a concentrated full flavoured Adelaide Hills wine.
