Cracka Review

This cheeky little Riposte Savvy is made by one of Australia's legendary winemakers, Tim Knappstein. It is very much a retort to the Marlborough Sav Blancs, and a refreshing alternative. Vibrant scents of gooseberry, apples, lemon citrus, and hints of freshly mowed grass decorate the nose, whilst the palate is racy and compact, with concentrated citrusy flavours, frisky acidity, and a dry, crisp finish.

Winemaker's Notes

After a decade of confusion about his name, which continues as a brand in the Clare Valley which he founded in the 1970's, Tim Knappstein made the decision to launch a new label in November 2006.

The name that was chosen was 'Riposte', (pronounced rip-posst) for which the dictionary definition is comeback, a quick reply, retort, or - in the context of the sport of fencing - a quick counter stroke.

The wines, sourced from selected premium vineyards in South Australia's cool climate Adelaide Hills, carry sword names reflecting the fencing theme. They display the pure varietal characters of this exceptional cooler region.

The aim of Riposte is to deliver top quality wines at affordable prices aided by meticulous winemaking, rigorous grape selection and Tim's 40 years of winemaking and judging experience.

2016 Riposte The Foil Sauvignon Blanc

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Bright greenish straw; vibrantly fresh and incisive, with kiwifruit, citrus and passionfruit on the bouquet, precisely replayed on the long, very well balanced palate. Outstanding value.

Australian Wine Companion 2014 Edition
Jeremy Oliver (2012 Vintage) says
Lightly herbal and floral, with pristine aromas of gooseberries, cassis and lychees backed by delicate herbal undertones. Long and elegant, its restrained palate of pure, essential fruit is supported by a fine chalkiness, finishing with persistent flavours of tropical fruits and an invigorating lemony acidity.
The Australian Wine Annual 2014 Edition
James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
Just a tinge of green to the colour; the bouquet has some appealing flowery notes, the palate with gooseberry, passionfruit and strong lemony/steely acidity on the finish.

A sophisticated expression of what makes this variety so popular. Its lightly floral, fresh and punchy aromas of passionfruit, gooseberries, lychees and melon are lightly grassy, pure and essential. Long and juicy, with a translucent presence of fruit and a fine, dusty texture, it finishes with refreshingly focused acidity and a faint earthiness. Great effort from this vintage!

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Bright, fresh and mineral, with a lightly floral, chalky bouquet whose aromas of gooseberries, passionfruit, pear and wet slate precede a long, bright and penetrative palate. Underpinned by a chalky, dusty mouthfeel, it delivers pure, intense lychee and gooseberry-like varietal flavour finishing long, austere and savoury, with a drying acidity and a lick of mineral.
The Australian Wine Annual 2012
Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
A fresh and lively sauvignon from one of the Hills' masters, this has a composed amalgam of passionfruit, gooseberry, some sweet fresh herbs, grassy notes and lime citrus. The palate's taut and savoury, with the latter setting it apart from the majority of others in this style.

Tyson Stelzer (2009 Vintage) says
This is an important style in the Sauvignon scheme because it has a totally different shape to Marlborough. The theme here is finely structured citrus, cool grapefruit, lime leaf and Pink Lady apple, avoiding green asparagus notes and ripe tropical nuances. Instead, it's refreshing and understated with a long, mineral finish.
James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Spotlessly clean aromas, then a palate with a sunburst of tropical fruits with splashes of passionfruit and gooseberry; good acidity on the long finish
Australian Wine Companion 2010 2009
James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
A clean and expressive bouquet reflecting the abundant gooseberry/passionfruit/tropical flavours of the palate; crisp acidity to close.
Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008
Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says
Tim Knappstein has produced some stunning sauvignon over the years, and this is right on the mark with passionfruit and ripe green herbs. The palate drops a ball of tropical flavour, really impressive concentration, some musky texture and cleansing acid all add up to easy enjoyment.
Good Australian Wine Guide 2009 2008
Matthew Jukes & Tyson Stelzer (2007 Vintage) says
After a short time out of the limelight, Tim Knappstein has made a comeback with Riposte. When it’s time to turn down the volume and relax into a classy evening, Tim has created your perfect foil. This is about as restrained as Sauvignon can get outside of its spiri- tual home in France, the Loire Valley. There is no turbo gooseberry work to be found here, just calm, serenity and control. Much like you will be after your first sip.
Taste Food & Wine Guide - 2008
James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Opens quietly but correctly on the clean bouquet, then has masses of flavour bursting from the palate in a classic mineral/gooseberry/tropical mix.
