Cracka Review

We believe that Yarra Pinot is up there with Australia’s best. The guys at Rochford have a canny ability to tease out immense flavour from Pinot fruit to craft a wine of real elegance. It’s richly structured with flavours of dark cherry and plum as well as being soft, silky and seductively charming. This is a treat of a wine that would be just the thing to give someone who has not had the pleasure of trying a lighter-bodied red like Pinot Noir before.

Winemaker's Notes

Tasting Notes: Medium colour. A gentle aromatic nose that is quite complex for an entry level wine. Red fruits, cinnamon and truffle are present. The palate is subtle and fine however there is also good weight and it is approachable now. A wine made for drinking over the next 3 years.

Viticulture Notes: 100% Yarra Valley – the grapes for this wine comes from our Yarra Valley, Hill Road property and 2 other neighbouring properties. 2016 will be remembered as one of the warmest and earliest harvests on recored. Above average yields and early ripening kept winemakers busy, highlighting the importance of time spent in the vineyard.

Vinification: De-stemmed to open fermenters (50% whole bunch), short cold soak, natural primary and malolactic fermentation, 19 days on skins, pressed to French barrels (15% new).

Elevage: 10 months in oak, racked once before bottling, un-fined.

Alc/vol: 13.3%

Suitable for Vegans.

James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
More savoury, spicy, briary aromas; the developed flavours follow down the same track, but will please some greatly.

Undoubted cool-grown, southern Victorian origins; savoury/earthy/spicy flavours; some length.

Jaboulet, from France's Rhone Valley, make a wine they call Parallele 45, since that imaginary line runs very close to their winery. So when I first heard of Latitude pinot, I thought snap. But no, apparently it's about latitude in releasing new wines vis a vis Rochford's 'position as a showcase destination'. Life's easier when I don't try and decipher these things, and just enjoy the winesÑlike this delicate, silky, red berry-flavoured pinot.
