Cracka Review

There's a certain style of Savvy we have come to expect from Marlborough, and this offering from Saint Clair ticks all the boxes for lovers of the style. There are plenty of passionfruit, citrus and other tropical fruits on the nose, whilst the palate is crisp and crunchy with a talcy texture, bright lemony acidity, and a dry, refreshing finish. It's great value, so you can keep a bottle permanently chilling in your fridge.

Winemaker's Notes

Colour: Pale straw.

Aroma: Passionfruit and blackcurrant with a hint of salty sea air.

Palate: A rich palate with passionfruit pulp, pink grapefruit, and blackcurrant flavours, with a salty minerality and a long lingering finish.

Ageing potential: Perfect for drinking immediately, this wine will be at its best over the next two years.

Winemaking and Viticulture: Fruit was sourced from a selection of vineyards located predominantly in the lower Wairau sub-region. This is what Saint Clair regards as Marlborough’s best sub-region for Sauvignon Blanc, producing wines with heightened expression. Each vineyard block was harvested at optimum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness. Grapes were transported to the winery quickly and pressed off immediately to minimise skin contact. After cold settling the juice from each batch was fermented at cool temperatures using selected yeast strains. Each batch was assessed for quality and only the best components were selected for this premium blend.

Food match: A perfect accompaniment for any fresh seafood.

Alc/vol: 13.0%

2016 Saint Clair Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Expert Reviews

Bob Campbell MW (2016 Vintage) says
Perhaps not as concentrated as the Pioneer Block wines, but with an appealing silky texture and an attractive mix of herbal and tropical fruit flavours. Seductively easy-drinking Sauvignon Blanc.
2016 - 2020
Nick Stock (2012 Vintage) says
Pungent, heady aromas of gooseberry, passionfruit and tropical fruit burst energetically from the glass. Some texture here too, which sits nicely with the heady fruit characters. Vibrant and thirst-quenching, with everything you d expect from an estate that has made a name for the quality of its sauvignon blancs.
Good Wine Guide
Wine Companion (2012 Vintage) says
Pale straw, vibrant hue; this elegant, yet punchy bouquet offers citrus, chalk and a hint of fresh asparagus; the palate is where the story is really at, as the concentration, energetic acidity and fruit all work seamlessly together for a long and layered finish.
James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says
Light to medium yellow-green; the bouquet is slightly dull and muted, though without fault. The palate, likewise, has varietal fruit flavour but lacks the sparkle and zip of the best wines.
Australian Wine Companion 2001 2001
James Halliday (1997 Vintage) says
Light green-yellow; the bouquet is firm, clean and crisp with tangy capsicum and herbal notes. The palate is very lively, with a tangy lift to the fruit, and braced by some mineral/chalky notes which run through to the finish.
