From a 0.82ha vineyard planted in 1978. Subtle florals and pure lemon/lime, with that hard to describe ‘crushed rocks’ character. Light bodied, reticent and coiled up, but there’s no mistaking the intent here: it’s one for the cellar. Super line and length. Pure, delicate, and very high quality.2020 - 2036
Clare riesling at its best, deceptively delicate and elegant, but with great length and hidden power that will take it through decades to come. The floral bouquet leads into a palate with lime, grapefruit, and fine acidity.Australian Wine Companion 2014 Edition 2013
Vines: The 2016 St Francis Xavier Single-Vineyard Riesling was produced with fruit from the Weikert Vineyard, one of Sevenhill’s five Riesling vineyards. This small vineyard (0.82ha) was planted in 1978 and has been recognised for consistently producing outstanding fruit to meet premium requirements.
Vintage: Yields were above expectations and quality was high for the 2016 vintage, particularly for the core varieties of Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Good rains in late January 2016 and early February gave the grapes a welcome boost on the eve of picking and harvest conditions allowed even ripening of the fruit. Picking started at Sevenhill on Wednesday, February 10, and the steady flow of high-quality fruit produced outstanding varietal character and flavours.
Winemaking: The winemaking style is preservation of the pristine fruit characters that develop during ripening of the berries. Careful fruit selection ensures that the wine’s character is one of great elegance and varietal authenticity.
Attributes: The 2016 St Francis Xavier Single-Vineyard Riesling exemplifies the variety’s great purity and elegance with its floral style, delicate citrus character and lingering minerality.
