cracka review

The team behind Sons of Eden are serious stars in the making and if they aren’t one of the hottest Barossa names in a decades’ time then I will eat my hat. But seriously, young guns with serious intent is what we love here at Cracka and these guys have it in spades.

Straight out of a top-drawer Eden Valley vineyard comes the classically-styled Freya - a limey, zesty, refreshing Riesling with fine balance and complexity. It will improve in the bottle but why bother as it is so good right now.

expert reviews

Rob Geddes MW (2012 Vintage) says
Well judged ripeness and acid balance for seafood till 2015, and then hold three years for bottle development. Appealing ripe regional aromas with lime, apple and citrus blossom and a suggestion of jasmine. Generous fruit flavour, ripeness with roundness and length hinged by fine zesty mineral acidity which gives this wine length and a zesty chalky finish that holds the red apple lime nectarine fruit together.

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
This is classic Eden Valley at its best; the fragrant, flowery citrus blossom aromas lead into a laser-cut palate, at once juicy yet minerally, the flavours hitting the tip of the tongue as the wine enters the mouth, and then refusing to go away.

James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
“Some smoky reduction, then into a burst of spicy, juicy citrus and stonefruit flavour – almost to lemon and mango sorbet. It combines an appealing softness with flinty/slatey texture and a satisfyingly long and even minerally finish. Lovely to drink. Should age surely. “

Good example of regional style with lime citrus flavour and generosity. The 2011 showed the finer regional aromas and flavours of musk and rose.

Pale colour, vivid green hue; fresh lemon and apple blossom bouquet; the palate is off-dry, providing enough richness to act as a foil for the chalky, and quite mouth-watering acidity; long and fine.

The purity of the wine reflects hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed grapes from a single vineyard, then cool fermented; comes into full focus on the soaring finish and lingering aftertaste.

Has quite remarkable intensity to its flavour, with citrus, apple and even stone fruit wrapped around a core of stony acidity. Built to last

Is developing very slowly but equally surely; lemon zest/peel notes on the back-palate lead into a clean, bracing finish and aftertaste.

winemaker's notes

Freya was the foremost legendary Goddess of ancient Germanic lands where the Riesling grape originated. This single vineyard wine honours early German settlers who cultivated the Riesling vine in the exemplary micro-climate of South Australia’s Eden Valley.

A bouquet of elderflower and lavender surrounded by hallmark Eden Valley fresh lemon and limes. A zesty palate with apple and citrus flavours finishing with a bright crunchy acidity.

A near perfect ripening season punctuated with weeks of warm dry days and typical cool Eden Valley nights lead to a slow but steady flavour development and generous levels of natural acidity.
