There's lots of tropical fruits running around the glass, with overtones of apricots and spice. The palate is zippy, zesty and lip smacking with a hint of herbaceousness, and a citrusy acid line that leads to a juicy, dry finish.
When the late Greg Trott christened a flat, barren landscape at the front of our winery ‘Scrubby Rise’, he started a theme that things aren’t always as they seem at Wirra Wirra. In keeping with Trott’s laid back Aussie humour, today the vineyard is overlooked by a viewing platform known as ‘The Jetty’, while a well dressed gent in a red boat rows between the vines. The message is not to take life too seriously.
Colour: Brilliant, pale and clear with flashes of green.
Bouquet: The Sauvignon Blanc provides lifted passionfruit, melon and gooseberry lift on the nose alongside the classic citrus notes of Semillon.
Palate: Juicy and zesty, early fruit on the palate is dominated by Sauvignon Blanc with grapefruit, citrus pith and stone fruits. The Semillon provides fresh lemon juice and gives the wine length and a bright citrus spine.
Drink: Drink while young and fresh.
Food Match: Grilled halloumi salad.
Vinification: Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon were picked earlier to display fresh leafy and grassy notes. Grapes were de-stemmed, crushed and chilled to 5 degrees on the way to the airbag press. The wine was then pressed keeping the free run and pressings juice separate in stainless steel fermenters. Juice was cold settled below 5 degrees for a week and racked from gross lees. The clear juice was warmed to 16 degrees and inoculated with yeast to begin the fermentation process. Once the ferment was completely dry and settled, the wine was blended, stabilised and lightly fined before filtration and bottling.
