The Yalumba 'Y Series' strikes again with this medium-bodied, brightly fruited Merlot from South Australia. Black and blue fruits waft out of the glass, along with fleshy plums and a hint of meatiness, before the palate kicks in with juicy, plummy flavours, slinky tannins, bright acidity, and a fruit and savoury finish that will see this match well with lamb chops and thick-cut chips.

Winemaker Comments: The 2016 Y Series Merlot is the first vintage where we fermented using only wild yeast found in the vineyard and winery. The wine was fermented in both static and rotary fermenters by wild yeast with cool to warm ferment temperatures, enabling us to maintain the fruit friendly, supple wine that we are seeking.

Tasting Notes: The 2016 Y Series Merlot is vibrant crimson in colour with a magenta hue. It has aromas of fleshy black fruits; the nose is brooding with hints of briar. There is a strong sense of place with the wine showing aromatics from the cooler Limestone Coast. The palate is generous, round and succulent. The mid-palate shows a lovely synergy between the fruit and tannins with hints of exotic spices and finishes fresh and lively.
Perfect with a traditional Cassoulet; or a Kabuli chickpea, spinach and red onion pasta. Vegan friendly.

There are plenty of blue fruits and a gently meaty edge to the nose here; fresh and lively. The palate has bright and crunchy fruit flavours in the mixed berry spectrum, and a really brisk, crunchy finish.

The Y Series reds are very cleverly made. Balance is usually the key. I tried this alongside the Yalumba Y Series Shiraz of the same vintage. And while I reckon this is a pretty decent wine - especially given the price - the shiraz outshines it. This tastes of polished cedar and mulberry, woodspice and twiggy blackberries. It's good (to very good) for the most part, but it leaves a bitter aftertaste. It's a pity because for the most part, it tastes (and smells) excellent.

Subtle, delicate wines don't fare too well in the Australian show-judging system. It's too easy to overlook them among a large class of their peers. So it was with our first reaction to the 2002 Yalumba Y Merlot. Yet this delightful red has all the qualities that you'd want in an Australian merlot: it's generous, fleshy and juicy, has all those ripe, red-berry flavours, is subtle, delicate and spicy, has wonderful balance and an attractive finish. So it's earned a repeat of last year's Bloody Good. Excellent price, too.
