Winemaker's Notes

The tiny village of Watervale (population of 246), nestled in South Australia’s Clare Valley, is renowned for the quality of its Riesling.

Our Watervale Riesling is picked from a special part of the Florita vineyard in Watervale. This famous Riesling vineyard usually achieves full ripeness, with high natural acid levels.

Wine has been flowing in the Clare Valley since 1851 and is an integral part of the culture. It is one of Australia’s most prestigious premium wine regions, most famous for its Riesling and Shiraz. A small area, accounting for less than 1.5% of Australia’s total wine production.

With its beautiful, rolling hills, ideal winter rainfall and Mediterranean climate, the Clare Valley carries a unique history and winemaking heritage.

Sight: This wine is a pale straw colour in the glass.

Aromas: The nose has vibrant aromatics of lemon, orange blossom and fragrant floral musk.

How It Tastes: The wine is driven by a powerful depth of flavour; lemon, lime and grapefruit with classic Watervale musk. Its clean line of acidity gives great length and drive to the generous offerings of flavour. The wine finishes with a gentle touch of mineralic texture to round out a mouth-watering, classic Watervale Riesling.

Recommended Food Pairings: Pork, rich fish (salmon, tuna), spicy food. Serve at 8-10 ̊C.

Drink By: 2025.

expert reviews about

2017 Jim Barry Watervale Riesling

Expert Reviews

Nick Stock (2012 Vintage) says
A great vintage of a classic wine, which has lovely Watervale talcum powder and lime and grapefruit citrus fragrance, sweet perfume and good concentration here. The palate is a vibrant, clean and crisp affair, with brilliant acid spark and a lively, juicy and powerful edge. Racy and poised to age very, very well.
Good Wine Guide
James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Pale green-quartz; a classically structured and balanced Riesling, already with plenty of zesty lime flavours underpinned by good acidity; will develop very well over years. Its structure is particularly impressive.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Straw- green; not a hair out of place with this excellent expression of Watervale, with mouthwatering lime/lemon juice flavours crosscut by acidity; a long and clean finish and aftertaste. Excellent value.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
High-quality riesling at its price, with abundant citrus and herb fruit on the mid-palate, the long finish driven by lemon juice acidity

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Is particularly well-balanced in a generous mode; lime and tropical fruit in abundance; good length.
Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008
Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
A vibrant, floral and schisty perfume of penetrative citrusy aroma precedes a round, juicy and generous palate of genuine length and freshness. It's long and refreshing, with slightly confectionary fruit, a lemon sherbet texture and a crisp, crunchy finish that reveals just a hint of sweetness.
Australian Wine Annual 2008 2007
James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Bright light green-yellow; the smooth bouquet has sweet lime juice aromas; the palate is fresh, well-balanced with attractive lime and lemon flavours, and has a lingering, almost silky finish. Should develop quickly.
