Alkoomi Blackbutt Red Blend

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Dark and compelling cassis and cedar bouquet, with ironstone minerality and a mere suggestion of toasty oak; full-bodied and powerful with great depth and freshness, fine tannins and expansive black fruits to conclude; generosity of fruit, rather than winemaking artefact, is the key.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
The estate plantings, now up to 40 years old, provide effortless power to the array of red and black fruits that drive the bouquet and palate alike; cedary oak and slippery/silky tannins add lustre to a quality wine. Cabernet Sauvignon (48%)/Malbec (28%)/Cabernet Franc (16%)/Merlot (8%).

Rob Geddes MW (2007 Vintage) says
At best this has depth of middle palate flavour with sweet fruit and very fine tannins.

Ray Jordan (2007 Vintage) says
This is a blend of cabernet with malbec, cabernet franc and merlot. A powerful and concentrated wine of poise and elegance. Deep intense black fruits on the nose with plenty of oak in support. The firm palate is built with some longer term cellaring in mind. It's a little tight at the moment but the potential is good.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
Blackbutt is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, malbec, cabernet franc and merlot. This is an interesting wine. It tastes of mint, but good mint - in a liquoricey sort of way. Strong blackberry and briary fruit too and a smooth, nutty, tannic texture. You can almost taste tangy, preserved lemony flavours here. Some tininess to the finish. Medium- to full-bodied. Won't age.
The Big Red Wine Book 2010/11 2010
James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Medium-bodied; gently complex cedar and cigar box overtones to blackcurrant and mulberry fruit; fine, lingering tannins.
Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008
Jeremy Oliver (2004 Vintage) says
A polished, smooth and elegant cabernet blend of Alkoomi's typically unctuous and dark-fruited style. Its confiture-like fragrance of blackberries, dark plums and cassis reveals herbal undertones of crushed vine leaves and cedary oak. Silky and refined the palate's deep fruit flavours and dusty lightly smoky vanilla oak are coated by fine tannins Tightly focused it finishes with a tangy note of dark olives.
