Alpha Domus Cabernet Merlot

Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (2002 Vintage) says
This Hawke's Bay red is designed for early drinking. The deeply coloured 2002 vintage is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, matured for a year in French and American oak casks (20 per cent new). Full-flavoured and supple, with fresh cassis, plum and green-leaf characters, a hint of sweet oak and some complexity, it offers good value.

Michael Cooper (2001 Vintage) says
This Hawke's Bay label is designed for early drinking. The 2001 vintage is full and bright in colour, with a spicy, slightly earthy bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, it's a smooth, plummy, ripe-tasting red in the Bordeaux mould, with good tannin and acid balance. Already enjoyable, it's not a blockbuster, but offers very satisfying drinking.

Michael Cooper (1999 Vintage) says
The 1998 vintage is a superbly concentrated Hawke's Bay red, bargain-priced. A blend of Merlot (54 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (35 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (11 per cent), matured for a year in French and American oak casks (25 per cent new), it's crammed with beautifully ripe cassis, plum and spice flavours, braced by supple tannins. The 1999 is a much lesser wine, fullish in colour, with herbal flavours and high acidity.

Still a baby, with huge, purple-flushed colour, the 1998 vintage is a superbly concentrated Hawke's Bay red, bargain-priced. It's a very charming and seductive wine, but also has the muscle to mature well.
