Made from native Portuguese red grapes, this is a lovely, bright, medium-bodied wine that displays scents of dark berries and plums on the nose, with generous whiffs of dried herbs and deli-meats. The palate is quite elegant and slinky, with flavours of choc-coated fruits and anise spice, fine, chalky tannins, and a decent, savoury-edged finish. An excellent food wine that would go with a range of red meat or game dishes.
Alvaro Castro’s two quintas: Pellada and Saes are the Dão’s quality-style leaders. Alvaro releases wines eponymously, using either
of the two Quinta names. These two wines however, are blended from both Quintas.
Peppermint and brush (classic Touriga Nacional) lead with nice Syrah-like velvet-spice purple fruit in behind, crushed limestone lifting it along with lots of dried herb and spice. Dry, with load of dried herb, meatiness. Tannin and natural acidity complete the picture. Touriga Nacional/Alfrocheiro/Jaen (Mencia)/Tinta Roriz.
