Angullong Wines Fossil Hill Shiraz Viognier

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

The first lesson with Viognier is learning how to pronounce it, so here’s a quick phonetic guide: vee –on –yay is the easiest way to turn the variety into less of a mouthful when asking for a glass. Thankfully this wine from Angullong is not a difficult mouthful to enjoy, showing how this rich and full-bodied variety has found a likely home in the Orange region. It’s fully aromatic displaying apricot, orange and spice on the nose before revealing a multi-layered palate of rich fruit, oak and a clean, acid finish.

Winemaker's Notes

Colour: Deep ruby red, almost black with a purple hue.

Aroma: Floral aroma of violets, cherry, spice with blackberry and black pepper aromas.

Palate: Full flavoured with dark berry characters and a lovely earthiness complementing the ripe, fresh fruit. Tannins are fine and balanced.

Food Matches: Char-grilled meat, game, casserole and cheeses.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
A pleasing aromatic style, with a little apricot flesh and juicy red fruits.

James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Dense purple-red, typical of the blend; extremely powerful and dense, but not extractive; masses of dark plum, blackberry and licorice plus that unique lift of viognier. A cellaring special from this up-and-coming region.
