Artardi are one of the top producers out of Rioja Alavesa. They produce limited amounts of wine from low-yielding vineyards - hence the price. But the results are astounding! This offering from the rich, ripe 2010 vintage is from old-vine tempranillo out of the village of Laguardia, and shows deep, dark smells of black and blue berries, dried flowers and exotic spices on the nose. The palate is medium to full-bodied and graceful, with juicy berry flavours, generous hits of curry spices, fine-grained tannins, and a never-ending finish. This will live for years!
In the Rio Seco, it’s south-east facing, with deep limestone and clay soils. 'El Carretil' is 5.5 ha, and plantings range in age between 50-80 years. The nose is savoury, subtle, mature and pure. Dark and foresty woodspice aromatics with tuber-rose, gentian violet, and sweet spices. The palate has an awesome harmony, lands mid-palate and radiates in all directions, with very good fruit/tannin interplay and acid nipping all the edges. Profound.
