Ashton Hills Piccadilly Valley Pinot Noir

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Here's a pinot noir out of the Adelaide Hills that has a Euro-centric personality. There's plenty of red berries and dark cherries on the nose, and it's all intertwined with hints of earth, white pepper and savoury meatiness. The palate is medium-bodied and red fruited, with fine but slightly grippy tannins, bright acidity, and a nice spicy finish. It will develop further, but would be great with some roast duck tonight.

Winemaker's Notes

Bottled in March 2012 the 2011 P.V. is medium brick red in colour with an attractive cherry, plum, berry nose and with already a hit of barnyard complexity. There is sweet fruit along the length of the medium weight palate while a touch of stalky tannin lengthens the palate and provides the bit of grip so important for rood and longevity. I think you'll find the wine quite delicious now but suggest cellaring for around five years if it's those developed, funky, forest floor characters you're after.

Stephen George’s 1982 planted vines and his two neighbouring growers comprise the oldest pinot noir plantings in the Piccadilly Valley, the coolest pocket of the Adelaide Hills. These vineyards are the source of his entry-level pinot noir, a wine of supple fruit drive, soft approachability, alluring rose petal perfume and ripe strawberry/cherry purity. A small inclusion of stalks in the ferment provides notes of brambles, forest floor and sap, while small French oak barriques keep the oak influence subtle.

Similar colour to the Estate, with just a little less purple; has more primary pinot expression, the red fruits a little warmer and riper, the forest floor and stem notes less obvious. Some may prefer this to the Estate because it is easier to understand.

Totally clear ruby-red; immediately signifies its Ashton Hills genesis with foresty, spicy, savoury aromas and flavours surrounding its core of plummy fruit. May not be everyone's style, but it is mine.

Shows some colour development; as always, has an extremely expressive and complex bouquet, with forest undergrowth and spicy red fruits; the palate is a precise replay of the bouquet, with great length and immaculate balance.

From his own vineyard in the best years, equivalent of his Grand Cru with intensity and structure.

This is the entry-level from Ashton and it's a safe bet for authentic pinot character, plenty of cherry fruits and cool earthy undergrowth. The palate delivers impressive concentration and fruit density, fairly solid texture on a bed of light tannins - cherry fruits from start to finish.

Good colour; light- to medium-bodied; elegant spicy, savoury, foresty surrounds to the core of blackberry and plum fruit.

Medium red with a tinge of purple. Although tasted when only 18 months old, the wine had already developed complex, secondary bottle-developed aromas, suggesting more rapid developments than the '97 Reserve. The wine comes into its own on the palate, with tremendous length and grip to the foresty/earthy flavours.
