Tyson Stelzer (2012 Vintage) says
With a production of 870 bottles, this is one of the larger production wines for a brand described more as a passionate hobby than a profitable business by its owners. Their fanaticism is evident in every riesling they make, exemplified in an impeccable balance of acidity and sweetness. Painstaking avoidance of botrytis-affected fruit makes this a clean and primary style, yet lacking nothing in exotic, lush complexity. There's gardenia perfume, lemonade, grapefruit, star fruit and golden delicious apples, with an undercurrent of fine minerality, a long-lingering persistence and a crisp lemon/lime close. $35 direct.

The four 2011 releases of riesling specialist Auburn present a compelling case that there’s more to the subregional distinctiveness of Central Otago than pinot noir. They have learnt from the styles of the Mosel, while unashamedly portraying the unique fruit flavours, acid profiles and mineral expressions of their distinct sites. Crafted in tiny quantities from the Bald Hills vineyard, this is my pick of the 2011s, for its wonderful seamlessness of scintillating acidity, chalky minerality and brilliantly balanced medium sweetness (47g/L).

Riesling specialist Auburn has elevated Central Otago to new heights in 2011, capturing wonderfully chalky minerality between lemon-infused alpine streams and snowcapped peaks of scintillating acidity.
