Cracka Review

Balgownie wines are one of those reliable winery names you always know will over deliver on price. This Cabernet Merlot is ticking all the boxes for what we look for in the quest for drinkability, it’s balanced, soft and kicks above its weight. Elegant and medium bodied with aromas of raspberry all framed by a persistent and soft tannin finish. This is the kind of wine that will win you new friendships when you head to an informal barbecue as it goes with all types of white and red meats.

Winemaker's Notes

The fruit was crushed into a combination of small open fermenters and stainless steel tanks. The batches were individually handled with hand plunging and pumping over occurring each day during fermentation . At dryness the wines were pressed to French barriques (10% new) were they matured for 16 months before being lightly filtered and bottled.

Nose: The Cabernet Merlot displays ripe red and black fruits, plum cake and spicy vanilla oak on the nose.

Palate: This leads to a concentrated and balanced palate framed by a long fine tannin finish. Medium to full bodied our Cabernet Merlot.

Food: Partner with lamb and rosemary roast.

Cellaring: Drinks very well now and will cellar for a further 3 to 5 years.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Strong crimson; clever winemaking has blended Bendigo (51%)/Yarra Valley (41%) Cabernet with Grampians (8%) Merlot; this is a distinguished wine, medium- to full-bodied yet elegant, with a nod to Bordeaux thanks to its slightly savoury twist on the finish.

Very young, elegant wine with lovely minty, blackcurrant-like fruit and fine tannins.
