After ten years of making a 1,000 dozen single vineyard wines from three different soil types and blending the wines, the flagship wine has been joined by single block wines with names derived from the three men in winemaker Anita's life called Shield Wolf from the meaning of Randolf her husband, Gods Spear derived from Oscar, Heart and mind for Hugo. Planted in 1999, Big and ripe and generous with blackberry and plum barossa richness, moderate oak and good complexity. Very soft round and with a tension between tannins. The wines are youthful at release and need about 4 years to get the balance of primary and secondary fruit.

There s convincing, earthy, sweet-spiced complexity here in this ripe and brooding Marananga shiraz; dark plum, tarry blackberry fruits and plenty of depth on offer. The palate is sturdy yet soft, the essence of this part of the western Barossa; it delivers a length of tannin with a long train of supple, dark blackberry and plum fruit.

Crimson-purple; the decision to pick in mid-February paid big dividends with this Shiraz, ditto the 21 months in French oak hogsheads, mainly seasoned; it has juicy plum and black cherry fruit, and none of the toughness that marred many '07s.

This wine won the best shiraz trophy at the most recent National Wine Show - which is widely regarded as Australia's best wine show (if wine shows are your kind of thing; they're not really ours). It's deceptive, this one. It's clearly an outstanding wine, packed to the gills with dark, toasty, blackberried fruit flavour and thick enough to carve with a knife in terms of intensity and texture. It would be easy to write off as a 'fruit bomb', if a particularly enjoyable one. But the more you drink, the more you notice the fine, elegant tannin structure and the complete control of the finish. Glassy wine
