Barwang 842 Tumbarumba Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Pale gold, vibrant hue; year in and year out this high altitude wine excels in shows around the country; this vintage is tightly wound and unevolved, showing pure nectarine and charcuterie notes; the palate is linear and finely detailed, slowly opening up to reveal layers of flavour; beautifully poised and harmonious.

Tyson Stelzer (2010 Vintage) says
A brilliantly pristine Barwang, singing with alpine purity and charged with high altitude energy. The bouquet is elegant and fragrant, with lemon blossom and grapefruit zest, announcing a honed and energetic palate. A razor-sharp line of high-tensile acidity draws the finish out long and defined, screaming for time to build depth and flesh.

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
A contemporary, lean and oaky style. Its smoky, floral scent of grapefruit, melon, charcuterie meats and white flowers reveals suggestions of lemon pith, nougat and dusty vanilla oak. Long and mineral, its intense palate of deep ruby grapefruit/melon/lemon flavour finishes with austerity and tightness, with just a hint youthful rawness and edginess about its brittle acidity.

Smells inviting with classy oak and a savoury edge to the aroma, lovely cool climate chardonnay with freshness and delicacy. The palate is well weighted and balanced in the modern vein with a thread of acidity supporting the silky fruit and contributing to a layered finish.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
Finely composed, long and stylish, this very reserved and tightly knit chardonnay has a lightly toasty, nutty bouquet of grapefruit, cumquat, melon and fresh vanilla oak, with undertones of minerals and struck match. Its lean, focused palate of juicy, brightly lit fruit finishes with a bracingly clean acidity, lingering fruit and nutty, mealy aspects.

Ever more refined winemaking and more solids in the ferments have taken 842 to even greater heights in recent vintages. Textural and mineral with cool grapefruit, white peach and lemon.

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
The McWilliam's winemaking team responsible for 842 has got the style nailed, its near-delicacy utterly misleading, for the citrus and white peach fruit has great intensity, and simply soaks up the French oak. It still has all the indicia of a very young wine, and will continue to and probably past the end of this decade.

WINESTATE (2008 Vintage) says
Nice drink - subtle and well made with a hint of oak on the citrus/pear nose and a long, rich, flavoursome palate with excellent balance between oak, fruit and acid.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Bright green-quartz; is right in the superfine style of 842, the odd feature being the trophy, two top gold and three gold medals spread across its label all being from second-tier wine shows; it's oak is, as ever, subtle, the fruit flavours piercing and long.

Honeyed/kero characters on the lemon butter nose. Lovely fruitiness on the mid-palate, great overall length and balance, with more of the honeyed elements.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Glowing yellow-green; an outstanding cool-grown chardonnay, appropriately bedecked with gold medals; not often that a 3-year-old chardonnay is released for the first time. Four gold medals, all won in '09 for layers of complex fruit and quality oak.

Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says
Wrapped in wine-show bling, this cool-climate chardonnay has concentrated fine and flinty aromas of toasted lemon rind and grapefruit; some fresh almond here too. On the palate, it sparkles with bright acid and delivers toasty lemon and nectarine flavour that rides long and fine through the finish. Superb.
