Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Bass Phillip on song; strong purple-red; powerful, intense and focused dark plum and a dusting of spice; will develop superbly over 5-10 years; 21st-anniversary release made from all four estate vineyards (for the first time).

Nick Stock (2006 Vintage) says
The one and only 2006 release, an amalgam of all material spared from frost. It shows that typical Bass Phillip unfiltered hue in the glass, complex soft cherry fruit aromas, smoked spices and earthy undergrowth too; breathes to life with air. The palate is swathed in supple fleshy texture and has engaging density, tannins are evenly distributed, bright spiced red cherry flavour, flinty mineral notes and a spear of acid. Switches earthy through the finish. A superb statement of variety, region and producer.

Campbell Mattinson (2006 Vintage) says
If you were to track the development of quality pinot noir in Australia, an awful lot of the most interesting paths would lead back to Phillip Jones, the man behind Bass Phillip. This wine marks his twenty-one vintages of pinot noir growing. 2006 RELEASE It smells good, tastes great, and then finishes with a smoky, toasty aftertaste. If those smoky nuances stay well behaved, then we have an exquisite wine on our hands, with lots of dry tannin and flavour and pretty floral aromatics. The problem is that such smokiness has a habit of becoming more obvious, and unpleasant, the longer the wine sits in the bottle; only time will tell. DRINK 2008-2010.
