Cracka Review

If you're looking for great Riesling in the depths of southern WA it's hard to go past the various iterations of the Bellarmine Pemberton Rieslings. This particular wine is made in an 'Auslese' style which references the Pradikat system used by German winemakers to describe fruit ripeness (and hence sweetness). Auslese style wines are thus rather ripe and typically made with considerable amounts of residual sugar, as evidenced by this intensely sweet if still contained sort of wine, one that carries its sweetness with well enough acidity to keep fresh and bright and vibrant. A wonderful wine really and one that is just full of flavour and intrigue.

It took a German couple fascinated by wine to make Pemberton WA an unlikely destination to grow and make three kinds of Riesling. Thankfully their gamble paid off and there wines are now critically acclaimed. This is their sweetest, aperitif style that would happily sit against a sweet dessert or even a washed rind cheese or liver pate. A vibrant nose of citrus and sweet florals before a swathe of lemon and lime flavours, it starts off sweet but is balanced by judicious acids.

Winemaker's Notes

WINESTATE (2010 Vintage) says
Touch of citrus blossom to the nose. Very pleasant, intense, limey palate.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Good varietal definition, with a strong mineral core surrounding green apple and lime fruit; sweet, but with good texture; an interesting wine.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
An attractive wine, though with not quite the intensity and vibrancy of the best vintages; lime juice, spice and balancing acidity.
Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008
James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
The sweetest of the beautiful Bellarmine Rieslings, but - as with the others - maintains impeccable balance (and great length) thanks to its acidity. The development of the wine over the next 20 years will be fascinating to watch.
