The vines might resemble bonsai trees, but there is nothing small or diminutive about the wine itself. It's a rich, full-blooded style that is knocking on the door of 15% alcohol, and shows rich smells of ripe plums, mocha and pepper spice on the nose. The palate is plush and curvaceous, with fleshy plum and fruitcake flavours, appealing licks of dark chocolate and toasted cedar, mellow tannins, and a juicy, spicy finish. Rare roast meats are the only companion to this wine.
Set in High Eden, a region of rugged beauty between Eden Valley and the Barossa. Our Shiraz and Cabernet is grown on ancient podsolic soils that offer lots of quartz rock and little other sustenance. After five years of heroic effort the vines still looked like rootlings so we started calling it the Bonsai Vineyard. This Shiraz Cabernet has lifted aromas of plums and coffee vanillin oak signalling the intensely concentrated ripe plum, black cherry and spicy white pepper on the palate. The flavours combine with the sweet toasty oak and soft tannins to create a beautiful layering of taste and texture that continues to a long lingering finish.
