“This is a tremendous wine. Just terrific. The tannin feels so mature, so long, so sinewy. The fruit flavours are ripe and blueberried – and intense – but there is no heaviness here. Musky, vanillin oak plays an assertive role but given time, this won’t be an issue. Has an iodine character to it. A small amount of spice. A commanding presence. It finishes – eventually – with searing length.”

Deep crimson-purple; made predominantly from vines planted in 1868, and is genuinely a wine that is only made in the best vintages. I can’t help but think when I taste a wine such as this that my ashes will have been scattered decades before it fulfils all of its potential. It has lashings of blackberry, plum, blackcurrant and touches of liquorice and mint; the tannins are quite obvious, but ripe and in balance for a wine so blessed with great fruit.

Sourced from the original 1867 plantings, this is liquid treasure. The nose offers up an entrancing mix of ripe dark plum, blackberry and raspberry, and plenty of dark, stony, earthy complexity, a wealth of fine, hard, brown spices and a sheen of bright, modern oak. The palate is amazingly dense and deep: super-rich dark plum and toasted brown spice flavours, soulful, long tannin drive and a staggeringly long finish. This is an amazing wine in every respect.

Thomson Family Shiraz is only made from the 1867 planting in years where the fruit achieves outstanding quality. The style was heavy with oak and fruit concentration. Since 08 fruit richness has increased with more brightness and softer fine grained tannins increasingly obvious with no loss of quality.
