Bethany Old Quarry Tawny

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Here is a lovely introduction to fortified tawny-style wines. Made from a blend of Grenache and Shiraz, it's quite mellow with some appealing, sweet, Christmas pudding aromas and flavours, together with some nutty complexity. It's quite balanced, so it doesn't give the impression you have just blown your larynx out with alcohol, despite the 18.5% level. Would be excellent with some blue cheese, or perhaps just with a coffee after dinner.

Winemaker's Notes

Our Old Quarry Tawnyis made from the traditional Barossa tawny port varieties - Grenache and Shiraz, harvested late in the season to achieve maximum ripeness and complexity. After fortification with premium quality brandy spirit it is aged in old oak casks for an average of ten years. The bouquet displays intense raisin and nutty rancio characters which carry on to the mellow, dried fruit palate. The lingering finish is rich and full of flavour, with pleasant, well integrated tannins and brandy spirit.

Today, Bethany's winery and cellars nestle in the old quarry, as depicted in the1981 pencil drawing, featured on Bethany's original labels.

The Old Quarry Tawny is blended from a range of vintages to make a consistent Barossa style which has concentration as well as freshness and balance.

Nick Stock says
A traditional Barossa-style tawny made from grenache and shiraz, this is aged to an average of ten years. It's luscious but not too overwhelming for those that are new to these wines, deliciously smoothly textured, with sweet dried fruits and nutty, toffee complexity.
