There are so many family stories in the wine industry and the Bowens are another one of those who continue to produce the goods, vintage after vintage. In fact Bowen are one of the stars of the Coonawarra region producing consistently excellent Shiraz. We love the aromas of this Shiraz tending towards cherries and berries with undertones of leather and cedar. The palate is lengthy, structured and full of soft tannin. It’s great for cellaring in the short term, however we suggest you try some now with some rare beef or cheese.

An elegant and stylish wine that would have been even better without the sweet and spirity impact of 15% alcohol. Its deep, slightly earthy, meaty and gamy aromas of blackberries and plums are laced with black pepper, musky spices and sweet suggestions of chocolate/vanilla oak. Long, dark and savoury, its slightly sour-edged presence of dark plums and berries, smoked meats and minerals culminates in a savoury but slightly spirity and graphite-like mineral finish.

Very smooth and classy, with a spicy, heady perfume of cassis, iris, lavender and fine-grained cedar/chocolate/ vanilla oak backed by undertones of black pepper. Moderately rich and elegant, its intense palate of pristine, luscious berry/plum flavour and sweet oak is supported by a silky cut of fine tannin, finishing with lingering sour-edged fruit and gamey complexity.

Bowen Estate is still a favourite of red-wine drinkers and rightly so: it's an honest outfit of full-flavoured wines. Quality is now steadily on the rise after a slight blip. Bowen Shiraz's fan base will like this. It has ropes of tannins and spots of black pepper, though at heart it's cherried and curranty and robust. It's not what you would call a brightly flavoured wine (and it arguably lacks definition - to get all wine nerdy on you), but it has guts and structure. Very good.

Dusty aromas of sweet juicy small black and red berries, smoky vanilla French oak, white pepper, cloves and cinnamon precede a firm, pliant palate of length and richness. Backed by smooth, creamy oak, it is plush, fractionally meaty and currant-like,but has enough deep and bright, vibrant fruit for sound medium-term cellaring.

Elegant, fine-grained and deeply fruited, this is a marvellously long, firm and sumptuous modern shiraz. Laced with the scent of violets, its deep aromas of blackberries, blueberries, dark chocolate and meaty complexity reveal spicy undertones of doves, cinnamon and dark olives. Its long and sour-edged palate is framed by fine, drying tannins, finishing with a tangy note of mineral salt.

A restrained and finely presented, measured shiraz whose spicy, peppery fragrance of pristine cassis, dark plum, blackberry and mulberry fruit is supported by lightly toasty cedar/vanilla oak. Not especially complex, it offers a palate of full to medium weight and vibrant, dark-fruited and chocolate-like flavour backed by sweet oak and framed by fine, silky tannins. Long and minty, it's polished and restrained, with undertones of forest floor.

Long, smooth and sumptuous, its deep, pristine fruit, creamy oak and leathery game meat-like complexity culminate in a lingering finish of balance and harmony. Very stylish, very classy.
