Brokenwood Rayner Vineyard McLaren Vale Shiraz

Cracka Review

Dense black/dark red cherry colour. Maturation was in predominantly American oak (coopered in the Napa Valley) and the distinctive vanillin lift compliments the ripe dark berry and mocha chocolate aromas of McLaren Vale Shiraz.

A full bodied mouthfeel. Good viscosity and long flavours of plum, vanillin and charry notes. An excellent finish and although these wines can be consumed in their youth, they do develop into rich, chocolate/earth McLaren Vale mature reds. The palate has strong 'turkish delight' characters balanced by subtle oak and grape tannins. Food - Beef fillet and osso bucco.

Jeremy Oliver (2005 Vintage) says
A smooth, polished shiraz whose intense, brambly flavours of raspberries, redcurrants, cherries and plums are backed by meaty, spicy complexity and sweet vanilla/cedar oak. Its earthy, floral bouquet has a ripe, jammy intensity, with undertones of mint and cranberry. Slightly confectionery and darker-fruited, its supple, fine-grained palate finishes long and persistent, with lingering notes of five spice and licorice.

A medium- to full-bodied mainstream varietal style with blackberry, dark chocolate and some savoury/earthy notes; oak in appropriately solid support; good tannins and mouthfeel. Top vintage, top wine.

A meaty, tarry McLaren Vale shiraz with an almost brooding expression of dark fruit. There's a jammy regional aspect about its impressively concentrated aromas, which are backed by restrained cedar/vanilla oak and nuances of dark olives. Forward and juicy, it does dry out a little towards its slightly cooked and dead-fruited finish, which just lacks the freshness and brightness for a higher rating and later drinking window.

Supple, mouthfilling, medium- to full-bodied wine; dark fruits with splashes of chocolate and mocha; ripe tannins.

Deeply flavoured and faultless, this stylish modem McLaren Vale shiraz marries dark and slightly treacle-like fruit with smoked oyster-like oak and velvet tannins. Its spicy fragrance of sour cherries, dark plums, cassis and smoky vanilla oak reveals undertones of bitumen and cloves, while its moderately full palate is smooth and velvet-fine. Sumptuous, sour-edged and concentrated, it finishes with a lingering core of fruit and dark olives.

A complex array of spice, licorice and leather aromas; full-bodied, rich McLaren Vale style; shows alcohol sweetness.

Very smart, stylish and fully-ripened modern impression of McLaren Vale shiraz with a vibrant aroma of cranberries, red cherries and plums over meaty farm floor undertones, chocolate/vanilla /coconut oak and suggestions of menthol and mint. Smooth, long and luscious, its vibrant, spicy flavours of cassis, dark plums and sour cherries are enhanced by its reductive, charcuterie-like complexity and framed by the finest of tannins. A fraction spirity, but neither over-ripe nor porty.
